I have some live oak roots that are growing into my sewer line. I have been using some foaming root killer that seems to be working fairly well. My question is….how much do tree roots actually grow? Could I get away with using this product annually instead of twice per year an I am doing now?

like grass, and just as fast when they find a way into your sewer line, its like steroids for them.

all you can really do is dig it up and replace the bad section and trim away any small roots you find there.

when they dont have a way to reach into the sewer line, they just grow normally again and wont be trying to get inside the line once its all sealed up tight

Don't kill your roots. You would be better off replacing the sewer line with a thicker part.

As a rule of thumb, tree roots will grow out as far as their branches go. If a branch goes 20 feet from the base, assume roots will go 20 feet out.

I bought a new house in Texas. The sewer line started to back up. The new house was landscaped and two large live oaks were planted. The two trees were staked with metal tee posts. My friend has a plumbing company, he sent a camera down found tree roots. The next day the home builder for the subdivision sent a crew, they wanted to locate the leak, roots, etc. I looked at both trees, one was about 30% larger, I said, dig up this post, it had gone through the PVC pipe. We put a new section of pipe. Along with a few bags of concrete. That would seal around the new joints.

My suggestion, lay a new pipe, trying to stay away as much as you can from the tree.

That’s my problem the existing sewer service from the house to the street runs within about 3 feet of the live oak. I received a quote from the plumber who unstopped the line the first time and the quote was a little over $2000.

This is why I opted to try some tree root killer…
