Not a massive section, but this part of my yard will not grow anything in it. Whatever I put eventually gets washed away. Am I going to have to put sod down? I ask only because I'm guessing sod gets sold in larger quantities to where I would get more than I actually need.

Here's the direct link to the photo. Provides a much larger view:

Looks like it's in a very shady part of the yard. You'll probably have to plant a different type of grass that's in the rest of the yard. St. Augustine or Zoysia might be your best bet.

You can buy sod by the piece.

Sprig it from your existing lawn, and water a lot more than the tree needs. Without ample water, your sod will thin out over time.

Looks like really compacted soil. Take a screwdriver and see how easily you can jam a screwdriver in there.

100%.

Figure out what killed the old grass before you waste time and money trying to grow new grass.

Too much shade?
Is the sprinkler not hitting that corner?
Is there clay or construction debris below it keeping it from rooting?

If it’s rock hard you need to break it up and top dress it with something like black kow and sand mixed 50:50 to have a chance at growing something there.

I have had good luck with bags of Scott's "lawn soil" and then seeds. You will have to keep it moist for the seeds to mature.

There’s a place off of airline where you can buy sod by the piece. You just tell them how many you need, back your truck up and they load it up. But I would definitely figure out what’s going on before wasting the time and money. We put sod down on the side of our house and it eventually died and washed away. That side gets no light and stays absolutely soaking wet. We finally put concrete pavers down and just deal with it not looking perfect.

House faces the NE so we get the morning sun plenty. Massive sycamore right above. Eventually I'd like to get that sycamore down and get a new driveway in because it has completely destroyed it (before we bought the house.)

Probably not enough sunlight for centipede.
