A player can be recruited but come in on an athletic scholarship. As long as they maintain a certain GPA, they can play and never count as an initial counter. Then
This is the essence of a walk on. He is not on an athletic scholarship therefore does not count against the 85 limit.

After being on campus for a year on an academic scholarship, Nick can give them one of the 85 and still never count against the signing class counter.
Do you think only Alabama does this? If there is an open scholarship the spot can be awarded to a non scholarship player who was on the team the year before. The spot cannot be used for a transfer or an athlete joining the team for the first time.. This opportunity is afforded to all programs with open roster spots who want to reward walkons. I loathe Alabama and some of the things hey do but this is not one of them.

Do grey shirts NEVER count towards the class total?
No such thing as a grey shirt.

That does. What doesn't make sense is why more teams aren't doing the same... like us.

Thats because Bama files for a replacement scholarship for a player leaving the program and give that scholarship to the player that was greyshirting before they they count towards the following class. Does that make sense?
There is no such thing as a grey shirt. The person referenced is a non enrolled person. It makes no difference whether someone leaves the program and drops the total scholarships below the 85 limit. If a school has signed 25 in the prior class they are unable to use the open spot left by the departing player to add a 26th signee in the the FALL.
If they sign the player entering school in the fall he becomes a part of the new class signed in December for the next season. He is by rule an early entry and actually counts against the limit of early entries allowed in the spring.
The rule applies to every school. If you believe Alabama is in violation place show specific evidence and identify those players.

Real simple actually once you wrap your head around it. They get guys to enroll at Alabama and pay their own way for a bit. Then they use medical rs and voluntary withdrawals to obtain scholarships. They're basically paying recruits tuitions and cutting players on scholarship.
