I have been making all types of Gumbo for 40 years & Okra belongs in gumbo. Period.
The key to a great gumbo is a dark roux. Dark.
You can thicken with File' or okra but both have distict flavors and it is a taste preference for most people which determines the choice. I have experienced that most prefer okra over File'.
Chicken & Andouille or Seafood gumbo should always include okra. If someone doesnt care for okra fine but they would be in the minority.

I am eating a bowl of chicken and sausage gumbo as we speak.
No okra, but I love okra in my seafood gumbo.

It's personal preference. I put okra in my chicken & andouille gumbo but not in my seafood gumbo because I like seafood gumbo on the thinner side and the okra thickens it up too much.

You can't thicken the gumbo properly without okra....
I know how I make it, I'm just wanting to see what muddbone does, and then I'll decide if he can cook.
And wow with the downvotes on my earlier post.
You frickers must work with a bunch of women.

The trick is to cook it slow and low and let the Okra melt. My gumbo never turns our slimy, and it always has okra in it.

Nah. I really am a kind person at heart. Being that way, it makes me embarrassed for folks like you.

Like someone mentioned... There is okra gumbo and seafood gumbo.
My mom's seafood gumbo is more like a soup. I eat both but prefer seafood. And I am criollo from Nola.
Mud do you have a restaurant? Serioous question.
Riding for Fulton and Mud.

bullshite, it makes it slimy
------------------------------------
That's why you fry your okra first 'til it ain't ropey no more. Takes a good 15-20 minutes.
