So, if you are one of the 87,188 that was cooked to medium-rare while watching the Tigers beat-up on Western Carolina, then congratulations on surviving what is, most likely, the hottest day in Tiger Stadium history.

Western Carolina was Nick Saban's first game on the LSU sideline.

I was at both Western Carolina and the Appalachain State games, but for my money, the most miserable hot that I ever felt was during the Tennessee post-Katrina game.

I'm sure this took a lot of time, but simply looking at the high temperature and humidity of the day paints an inaccurate picture. You can't use both the high temp AND the high dewpoint because they hardly ever occur at the same time. They are usually several hours apart. The humidity is directly related to the dewpoint. A dewpoint of 69 and temp of 80 will have a higher relative humidity (69%) than a temperature of 98 and a dewpoint of 70 (40%). I would much rather the 80 degrees even though the "humidity" is "higher". Dewpoint is the best measure of "how comfortable" the air is because it tells you how much heat can escape from your body.

Additionally, the highest relative humidity of each day comes ~6-7 a.m. when the temperature is still low but the dewpoint is high. Duh. Because humidity is relative to dewpoint and temperature.

The 2000 W. Carolina game had a 7 p.m. kickoff, I think. At 7 p.m. the temperature was 97 with a dewpoint of 64 for a heat index of 99 (decidedly nowhere near the reported 140).

In contrast, at 11:53 a.m. on August 30, 2008, the temperature was 91 with a dewpoint of 72. That yields a heat index of 99 as well. Factor in that the Sun was rising and beating down on the crowd, versus the sun going down in the W. Carolina game, and it seems like the Appy State game was equal or greater to it.

The highest heat index during the 05 Tenn game was 96F.

I hate to sound like a dick, but there is no chance that there has ever been a game played in TS when the heat index was near 140. You can't simply match the high temp and humidity of the day to calculate the heat index because they don't occur at the same time.

Well you said:
quote:

First and foremost, and there is really no debating this, the hottest game in TS history, from both an air temperature and heat index standpoint, was on September 2, 2000, against Western Carolina

That is certainly debatable.

And if you're going to use "average humidity", why not use "average temperature" as well, since humidity is dependent on temperature? Especially since you said you wanted "an idea as to how comfortable, or unbearable the day was." It would make more sense to use the averages if you are talking about the whole day, tailgating, watching the band walk down the hill, etc. The whole day does take a toll on fans, not just game time.

I think the main reason I responded was due to the claim that BR has EVER had a 140 degree heat index.

uh yeah... appy state was the hottest game i've ever been to. twas ridiculous... 10am start in the last week of august right before a hurricane ripped through BR.

to say a night game was hotter than a day game with a 10am kickoff is pure silliness

The App St. game was ridiculous hot, plus it was at 10 am, and most were evacuating after. Probably the most miserable ive been at a game despite anything happening on the field.

I did not attend that game. Nor did I claim to.

but common sense tells me 10am > 7pm when it comes to being hot in august/september

That game was just awful. So bad that a buddy of ours was making runs with a the large drink cup you get and running to the bathroom and bringing it back full to hydrate us. Every damn one of us was near passing out and that was life saving.

All those games, all those stats, detailed weather surveys and charts, and not one time, NOT ONE TIME, did the obsessive compulsive manic stat dudes mention RAIN! I guess it is true that it never rains in tiger Stadium.
