Smith is a beast, but he is overrated to some degree. He has gotten too heavy as well.

Herman Johnson will actually end a better pro prospect than either Black or Smith. Oher is better than both of them.

It ain't worth much, since Andre committed to Mike Shula. You'd think his dad would know that.

Faneca is not a great analogy since he's a guard.

As for Andre, I have given up trying to use OT talent/production in college to project where someone will get drafted.

LSU's Whitworth was a much higher draft pick than I expected. I was very disappointed with him for the most part in college.

You mean one of Alabama's most hyped players is actually one of Shula's??

Yeah, you won't find me on here bashing Shula's recruiting. I'm not one of the "those were Shula's guys" propaganda spewers, or one of the "Miles' is only winning because of Saban's players" guys either.

Shula did what he could at Bama under schollie limits, and still managed to get commitments from some highly ranked players (some didn't make it to campus though).
Shula's problem was he was a horrible, HORRIBLE game day coach. He wasn't anywhere NEAR ready to be tossed into the open waters of the SEC.

I looked at the box score on ESPN and it doesn't show Pittman with any....

ESPN doesn't show defensive statistics. At least I've never seen them.

LINK

There's the official NCAA site and it shows Pittman with 2 sacks in the Bama game, he lined up against Andre Smith the entire game. There's also video evidence on page 3 of both sacks.

Maybe this is true, but there was never any real doubt about where Andre was going to college.

If you find the original report after the game, it was the play by play chart in the box score. I "THINK" Beckwith was credited with one of the sacks in the video provided...at least on the ESPN summary.

EDIT: This is what I was looking at

Smith is overrated, he's been above average but the hype he gets is absurd

Simply put, don't go by that. They get it wrong often.

I posted the NCAA's official statistics and someone else posted the statistics from LSU's webpage. Kirston Pittman had 2 sacks lining up against Andre Smith both times. There was also video evidence of this on page 3.

care to qualify this? I'd like to read something of substance other than what I guess to be a standard fan perspective. Do you know if he in fact graded low during his career at LSU. # of sacks contributed to????

My guess is that you have no clue as to what a successful o-lineman is truly defined by.

Most over-rated player last season. I've never seen a OT hold as much as he does and not get called. He's definately got the potential to be great.

did u just change your mind about the guy mid sentence?

I know for a fact he had his lunch eaten is several high-profile games, and/or made mental mistakes with false starts a la Carnell Stewart last year. but, uh, no I don't carry around LSU coaches' grading cards of their OL. sorry to disappoint.

cool. you rock.

Throughout HS and college, Whitworth was repeatedly talked about as a sure high draft pick at OT. I just never saw that consistent domination at LSU. Clear enough for you?

Are you his diddy?

fail.

As boring as it may sound, I am someone who watches the offensive line during games. I specifically watched the units he was a part of and, for the most, found his presence was significant. Were there times he got beat? Sure, but not many. But there were times where he played brilliantly (i.e. vs. David Pollack).

Oh, and I was an offensive lineman.

That's clarity, brother.

Yeah Andre Smith sucks, he couldn't even crack the starting 5 at LSU.

they aren't saying that, rather he just isn't the next coming of Chris Samuels or John "Hog" Hannah.

The one who is getting all the pre-season hype, is he the one who Pittman had his way with? Just curious.

he is a very good offensive lineman and deserves the hype, but yeah pittman did get the best of him.
