I really like the question. Guys who were really good but were career backups were probably recruited in the same class as some super stud they just couldn't get their nose in front of. Also back in the day of players going both ways, there were fewer starters so - more career backups. Players like Scooter Purvis behind Billy Cannon. Bo Campbell behind Jerry Stovall. Tommy Davis behind Jimmy Taylor and Red Brodnax. Paul Lyons competeing with Bert Jones. Randall Gay never started - I think. Some of these names will not even be recognized by most of the posters.
