re: Any word on Harold Perkins?

The Harold Perkins takes on this board are laughable.
Imagine not letting Von Miller or Lawrence Taylor, do what they do best.
1. Harold Perkins’ impact as a freshman was all world. Most of the current Perkins critics, have a short memory of how the felt about him literally 16 months ago.
What is laughable as how you oversimplified things and amazingly compared him to Von Miller or Lawrence Taylor. You must be clinically insane for those ridiculous comparisons. On the first point, Perkins definitely had an amazing FR season as everyone has pointed out. However, you must not have watching LSU the last 1+ seasons. What occurred was that the OC and position coaches of the opponents adjusted for Perkins. They made sure they accounted for him. And Dallas Turner he is not...or Von Miller...or Lawrence Taylor. If you put a body on him, he is not strong enough or with good enough moves to get around that blocker. Once again, opponents aren't stupid...they adjust...if the guy isn't good enough to counter their adjustments, he ends up being just another player.
quote:
2. As LSU fans, we spent his entire sophomore season in the twilight zone, wondering why the best pass rusher on the team was dropping into coverage 95% of the time.
See above...he was dropped into coverage because his pass rush was nullified.
You mentioned later a tackle he made against USC. Apparently you didn't want to mention he led LSU in missed tackles vs Alabama....did the same against Ole Miss. AYS Sports specifically mentioned his frequently missed tackles.
quote:
1. Many times when he rushes, other Tigers break free because of the extra attention he requires. Also consider the many occasions where the pressure he causes by pursuit literally runs the opposing QB into waiting teammates.
Utter nonsense.
quote:
3. Anyone thinking that a defense gets better, by taking away a player like Harold Perkins, is hard to imagine talking to in real life.
Apparently you didn't watch LSU games last season after Perkins got hurt. Weeks made the defense better which is why he was designated SEC defensive player of the week twice last season..at least twice I know of. That was Ole Miss and Oklahoma. You can claim the sun rises in the west also but your observations about Perkins are just as flawed and phony. He will be a 3rd day selection in the NFL draft because he is a tweener. That is why he has failed to establish a position in the LSU defense. You can blame the coaches or sunspot activity but the onus for his play is on him

I think most LsU fans don’t really comprehend how small Perkins is for the position they want him to play.
He is 6 ft 200-215 lbs. he runs like a deer.
He’s a strong safety.
We want him to pash rush but smart teams can scheme him into coverage.
The good news is that Perkins prolly needs us as much as we need him. He needs game film of him playing a viable NFL position. We need his athleticism at star.
Win win.

Yep, these people will tell you it’s not that he’s been misused it’s just that he was never good to begin with.
- he can’t shed blocks
- he only gets pressure when he’s untouched
- he can’t play the run
-he made a handful of plays in one game and that’s all he’s ever done
That is the narrative you’re getting here but the reality is…

Definitely light in weight...even for a college LBer. I can't speak about his pass coverage abilities...certainly fast enough to play safety but does he change direction quickly....aka "the hips" that all coverage guys have to possess. Does he play the ball well after it is in the air
His + are 1) seems to want to improve/coachable 2) very fast and athletic 3) has a non-stop motor 4) you will never see a player appear more impressive just running around the field (sideline to sideline)
His - are 1) he has no natural college position...aka a tweener 2) never seemed to gain any strength in 3 years at LSU 3) doesn't have the best football instincts

Bigger than some NFL LBs and about avg for a college OLB. Guys like Debo Jones, Duke Riley and Kwon Alexander were the same size at LSU recently. He was very good in pass coverage in 2023 ranking 1st among our LBs and one of the highest overall grades on the team last year. He does have a natural position, the NFL has him as a 4-3 WSOLB but we don’t have that position at LSU so he fits best as our Star where he played as a freshman.

crushed him but that has nothing to do with Perk. You’re also ignoring the fact that he switched positions after his freshman season but even still was the most productive player by far on D, still had the most sacks and highest win rate on the team in the pass rush. House’s defense was awful but Perks numbers were still very good in both seasons.
Do you think Weeks with his 114 total tackles so far this season is good? He has played great games and also has had numerous plays whiffing at the legs of QBs. Go rewatch the second half of TAMU and Bama. He loses gap integrity and his eyes fail him at times.
The one difference between the 2 is Weeks is good LB and not out of position for his size and strength. Weeks had 62% more tackles at the same position as Perkins in less games this season as any of Perkins previous 2. Why? Defenses didn’t “run away from Perkins”, like some think. A lot of times, they ran right at him.

Exactly, Weeks is playing exactly where he should be and Perkins hasn’t since he was a freshman. He’s also playing in a different defense and playing a different position from Perkins. Last year when he was moved inside Perkins was moving all over the place and lining up outside the tackle box way more than Weeks does this season.

Also have to remember that Speights and Penn rotated with Perk last season so Perk moved around a lot. This year post injury it was Weeks and Penn out there pretty much exclusively and in the same spot this year. Speights had 70tackles at LB last year so common sense would tell you that it would’ve taken tackles away from Weeks had we continued using 3 LBs the way we were previous to Perk going down. Weeks numbers shot up after, not before our rotation went from 3 to 2 guys.

From Saturday Down South site:
"Perkins is 6-1, 225 pounds, which would still be among the 10 lightest middle linebackers in the NFL (only 2 qualified edge-rushers are less than 240 pounds)"
And no he is a tweener...not big enough to play LB or an EDGE guy and hasn't proven to be "very good" in pass coverage...apparently you just made that up. Also, how is "the NFL" has him. When I saw the rankings listed by NFL draft buzz site, he would have been the very last pick in the 4th round. If true, doubt the NFL has him projected anywhere at this point other than special teams. He is a 3rd day draft pick at best
Posted on 12/26/24 at 4:38 pm to NotaStarGazer
I didn’t claim he was an edge rusher, I said the NFL has him projected as a weak side 4-3 outside LB where he’s average size for a college LB and bigger than guys like Owusu-Koramoah who was 215lbs when he was drafted or Davis Gaither who was 218lbs. Both play the position Perk is projected to play at the next level.

I'd love to have Perkins back to spy some of these QBs. At times, Weeks lacked the speed needed to keep up with some of the faster QBs out there.

But as you also said, Weeks is a true LB. And Weeks makes the many tackles he gets to. The problem with Perkins is he gets to a lot of runners and isn't strong enough to make the tackles. That is why he led the team in missed tackles in the Alabama and Ole Miss games of 2023. I believe he had 6 missed tackles in the Miss game and 3 in the Alabama game. BTW, those aren't made up numbers...they are stats from the games.

Just use him the way he was used as a freshman. Burns played that position the last 2 years and I can’t help but wonder if BKs insistence on having Burns on the field 24/7 didn’t have something to do with Perks move. Maybe now that he’s gone we can get back to business.
Posted on 12/26/24 at 4:43 pm to Madking
Perkins at best will be a 2nd string LB in the NFL if he makes active roster. My brother considers him nothing more than a special teams players in the NFL...he may very well be right. And BTW, it isn't just size but strength. The reason Perkins misses so many tackles is the runner is simply too tough for him to bring down. If he can't bring down college runners, he surely won't bring down NFL backs or WR
Posted on 12/26/24 at 4:45 pm to NotaStarGazer
That’s all speculation, he was projected as a top 25 overall pick the day he was injured.

He can't be used like he was as a FR. The opponents adjusted after his very good FR season and knew that all they had to do was to assign someone to block him. He can't run through or around blocks if someone is assigned to him. That is why LSU had to move him more into coverage in 2023.

Weeks wasn’t on the field full-time prior to Perkins’ injury, because they were playing the same position. It was a huge part of the reason moving Perkins to Star made so much sense - it let you have both guys on the field.
That said I agree with your premise that the Star role is probably his most natural position in this defense (and that he’s a WLB in a 4-3).
Posted on 12/26/24 at 4:47 pm to NotaStarGazer
That’s incorrect, he changed positions and there are dozens of game video showing him doing the things you claim he can’t do.

Yes, didn’t mean it to sound disparaging to Weeks only that we went from using 3 to 2 LBs. If you remember sometimes we had Weeks and perk out there together as well so it was a lot of shuffling and moving around until fate forced some stability.

He was playing coverage in 2022 as well. He spent a much higher percentage of his snaps lined up on the edge because he was part of the 3rd down pass rush package, but when he was on the field for other downs it was basically as a coverage OLB or as a QB spy.
The mistake in 2023 wasn’t asking him to play coverage. The mistake was asking him to play 3-4 ILB.
I think he could potentially still be part of a speed rush package but there are more moving parts when he’s a full-time starter, particularly in a base 4-2-5.
