Adam4848 - 2 questions:
1) How entrenched is Hess as a starter?
2) Any chance Gilbert returns to his '17 form?
It's been said a 1000X but Hess seemed an A-grade closer in '17 but a B-grade starter in '18.
Gilbert's velocity was down 3-5 MPH from '17. Just not the same pitcher.

Someone said Gilbert was fighting a shoulder issue all season. If it's resolved by next spring, he can be a quality reliever for us.

Hess wants to be a starter and CPM knows that this team will be better off if Hess is the lockdown starter that he has the talent to be. So he Will start the season as our friday starter no questions asked.
That being said with our new found wealth of pitchers he's going to have to be effective to stay in that role.

in 5 ABs in fall of 17, Storz went 0-5 with 4 Ks. He may have potential but he hasn't shown anything against college pitching as yet.

None of them want to hear that. They all think he's Ohtani

I never said anything about someone NEEDING to go.
I said the staff is so deep that come October, someone is going to see that their opportunity for innings is much diminished and look elsewhere. It happens all the time.

People have already answered but
Hess is going to be much better next season, he was asked to do so much in 2018 with little run support at times. He’s already dominating in limited appearances for team USA.
Gilbert was not himself last year. You can’t go from 96 to 89 and get the same swings and misses. His slider was nothing like it was in 2017. He’s the guy I’m not counting on to bounce back as much but they’re resting him so I think we’re all hoping for the best.

Roster numbers are very close and will work out by end of fall. Bryce J will be back, had another surgery on his knee a couple of weeks ago, but will be fine by fall. Gilbert is seeing Andrews, I haven't heard the results. Team will be very good next year, could make a serious run.

IMO Hillard & Fontenot could be nasty in middle relief, 2 maybe 3 innings an appearance.

Anxious to see how Walker and a healthy Labas & Storz look next year. Labas should improve to 2-3 mil/hr on his fastball.

Best pitching staff in the country. Need the bats to come through to win it all.

I'm just getting caught up after the signing deadline. If my math is correct, it looks like we'll have 39 on the roster heading into fall ball. Still some decisions to be made to reach the roster limit of 35, but hopefully everyone who had to deal with injuries this past season will be good to go next year. Combined with Hess, Dups and Watson returning and all the newcomers, it looks like we'll have a solid core for a deep run in 2019.

OF is set in stone, but anxious to see DiGiacomo play next year. The IF needs to settle on tightening the defense while adding the bats to be explosive. Garza/Willis/Beloso at 1st Dugas/Broussard at 2nd Huges/Smith/Bianco at SS Smith/Willis/Bianco 3B Mathis/Willis C Beloso/Jordan (if he's back) DH. I just hope that Smith is completely over that back situation that took him out this past year. Hope we can hear an update on him soon.
