Man...I'm glad I was too young to remember the Hallman years.

Archer's teams were seen as being out of control, so the no earrings speech was actually popular at the time. IF WE ONLY KNEW!!! I was told the do rag story by Jeff Boss, who was there, so it is true.

Going into Hallman's last year LSU was getting ready to kick off to A&M in the opening game of the year at Tiger Stadium. I had seats on the
West Side on the 25 yard line. Before I could get to my seat fans were booing and calling Hallman a dumbass. I sat down and asked a guy sitting in front of me what the fans were booing and screaming about. He said that A&M had won the toss. As A&M was lining up to receive the Kickoff I asked "so what's the problem?" The guy told me "A&M defered & Hallman elected to Kickoff so now LSU gets to kick off both halves". A&M had a good return and scored on the opening drive. The guy in front of me kept saying "Hallman is so bad that he didn't even wait until the season started to screw up".
Hallman won 16 games in 4 seasons. What an idiot.
I thought this happened at Georgia in his first game as head coach of LSU, but either way it typifies who the guy was. Joe Dean found a good way to save money on football while basketball and baseball were basically ATM machines.

Yep, that was the worst start to a season I can recall. Luckily Arkansas State came to town to give us a breather. Then, we squeaked one out over DiNardo. That team did start putting a little together...beat UK on the road and Ole Miss in Jackson (James Jacquet anyone?). The shot at a bowl was there, but Sleepy Robinson and that veer option just ate us alive. We played Tulane in a meaningless game a week later in the Dome. 5-6. Tied for best season at LSU under Hallman.

About all I can add is the fights...when you've been hitting on each other all summer, and it's 98 degrees tempers can flare. Guys would get in shoving matches, etc. Well, after practice we'd have to make a big circle and the guys who were going at it earlier would have to get in the middle. Gladiator style! He broke out boxing gloves, though, so it wasn't too bad. Talk about team building!
Oh yeah...and I remember too when he sat the whole team down and explained how every coach on his staff had won a championship somewhere, so the problem obviously couldn't be them. The losses were all on the players. In his defense though (not that he deserves one), there were some seriously pissy attitudes on those teams.

I remember a newspaper story the day after Hallman was fired quoting an un-named LSU player ..... "It's going to be nice to have a Head Coach who is actually smarter than the players".

At least 3, a coed, a golden girl, and the secretary was the big public one that cost him his marriage. After that was made public his wife said see ya

Entertaining thread although it was a dark time in LSU football history.

I was in such despair I cancelled my LSU tickets and moved from Louisiana in 1992 before the season began, and didn't move back until Saban had wrapped up the 2000 season. Personal viewing crisis averted.
So you are basically the biggest fair-weather fan ever. Congrats

Because of Hallman, many season ticket holders didnt renew their tickets. On a positive note, I was able to move to much better seating arrangements. You can always find some good in the bad, just gotta know where to look!
