Ace, don't know if you were around that year (my junior year at LSU), but that 61 team was fantastic - Dietzel later said that was his best team at LSU. An opening season loss at Rice then romped through the rest of the schedule (undefeated in SEC - co-champs with Bear Bryant's first NC team at BAMA), and crushed the Big8 champ in the Orange Bowl.
59 team was great, though underachieving, but their legacy ruined by agreeing to replay Ole Miss in the Sugar Bowl.

Dietzel with Mac covering his a$$ with a smothering defense while he took 4 years to do his offensive magic, which ultimately was nothing more than recruiting Billy Cannon and Jerry Stovall, did much more to put the Tigers into national prominence than Saban.
Fixed it for you.

Just depends, If Tennessee was to offer Saban more money than Alabama is paying then he would be gone in a NY minute. Saban is only there for the money!

I loved Cholly Mac as a kid. The man had 1 losing season in 19 years, went to 14 bowl games, had 2 Top Five teams and, 6 Top Ten teams, and kept LSU and Death Valley in the national spotlight for 20 years.

Later in that post, I said that the '61 and '69 teams were the best LSU teams to not play for a national championship. I'm not sure if those aren't the two best LSU teams ever (outside of 1958), including the recent championship teams. However, it's unfair to compare eras. I was referring to Dietzel, not the team when I said "sort of" a resurgence. He was a one year wonder compared to Mac's, and much of what he did, he owed to Mac's 5 or 6 ppg defense.
Sorry to anyone if they felt I slighted the 1961 team.

Nick said this week that Less had done a better job and won more games at LSU than he could have so......

A lot of people will say Charles McClendon, but by today's standards, he would be considered a mediocre/slightly above avg coach. If lsu were to hire a coach like this today, he wouldn't last 5 years
Right. If by "today's standards" you mean the absurdly unrealistic, "it's only a successful season if you're in the national championship game" standards of too many juvenile LSU fan wannabes.

I would say:
1. McClendon - as pointed out above, he had a number of VERY good teams and really only faded toward mediocrity at the end of his time and even his last, 7-win squad in 1979 team was much better than you might think from looking at the record. the schedule was insanely tough that year. Plus, if you give him any credit for his assistant coaching under Dietzel, I think this really becomes a easy choice. Also, please "bear" in mind that Cholly Mac was having to contend with Alabama during their golden age.
2. Saban & Dietzel - their accomplishments and tenures are very similar. Saban accomplished the turnaround more quickly but he really inheritd a lot more than I told that Dietzel did.
4. Miles - I put him behind Saban and Dietzel only because he inherited more. This is "#4 with a bullet," though, and Miles has every opportunity to be the undisputed greatest coach in LSU history.
5. Bernie Moore? I suspect this is the right answer but admittedly don't know much about him as I would like. He had some excellent teams and won a bunch of games.

Tigers had some great years under Moore. My Dad was at LSU in the mid-1930s, and Moore had some great teams. However, you have the same rap on him as Miles - he inherited some great players from Biff Jones. Moore's greatest years were his early ones (certainly WWII caused some disruptions to all of college football).

Don't you have to stay at a school for longer than what was it 3 years to really be up for the greatest coach in history.
He had the opportunity to possibly get that title but remember the NFL was calling but he wasn't interested.

while saban did great things for LSU. he only had one season where he had less than 3 losses.
here we are with miles where this could possibly be his first season with more than 2 losses. even though most of the fans here are flipping out about it. that is still pretty damn good.
not saying miles is our best ever. but to say saban is the best would just be wrong.

Saban was hear only 5 years, peaked in year 4 and had a sluggish 5th year 8-3 plus a loss in a bowl game.
