It might not be that bad of a statistic.
Basic Methodology
Punt distance-return Yards + (If ball ended inside 20 (20-net spot)
example
40 yards
0 return
17 yard line opponents take over
old net average is 40 yards.
my average is 43 yards
40-0+(20-3)=43

All punts configured:
Wing: 45.85 hack average
Allen: 45.62 hack average
or a total of 8.28 inches better for Wing over Allen.

Allen new adjusted long: 77 (2x)
Wing new adjusted long: 75 (2x)

Wing averaged 5.63 Bonus points per punt for inside the 20.
Allen averaged 5.36 bonus points per punt for inside the 20.

I hate to say it but if it is that close I would give the edge to the player who has punter 30 more times.
They are both great punters and represent Louisiana Universities very well.

eta: Thanks Guster for doing the leg work.

Substantively, yes. And necessary. The way it's done now is idiotic and seems to reward shitty teams.

They need a stat for number of punts inside the 5, 10, and 15. Prolly touchbacks too, to see how many opportunities they missed.

Your'e a moron for sorting it by total yards. He's 38th in Punt average and that's not fair either due to the fact that most of the time that he's doesn't have the whole field to boom one, he pins a ton of his inside the 20 and has only allowed 6 net punt yards all season long.

That is what I tried to do here, give a bonus to punts being downed inside the 20. Basically ever yard inside the 20 was a bonus point.
Wing averaged 5.63 Bonus points per punt.
Allen averaged 5.36 bonus points per punt.

oooh.. and then somehow work hangtime/return yards in to the formula so its almost as complicated as the BCS.

Return yardage is worked in. No hangtime though. I think right now it is simple enough that the average person can understand it. (I am talking about the general public not the big sports fans.) But it can still return solid numbers.
My only request is that if it takes off it is called the hack stat. It will be selfless because no one knows who I am on this board.

This stat is truly unbelievable when you factor in his net avg is 43 yds/punt. If he has a long field to work with, he booms the crap out of it and there is still enough hangtime that the returner either fair catches or gets hammered.

I didn't realize how accurate hecould control a punt until I watched the video with Mo. That was unreal.

Good job hack.

I like the way you did your stats. I think Allen suffers a bit due to possible coverage defects at la tech, but it's necessary to include because you want to know if he's out punting his coverage.

Both great punters. I think Wing has been a more integral factor in games. Allen is very good and has shown through his numerous punts.

Nice breakdown. If I have time, I may graph the various punts.

BTW, nice article about Brad Wing getting left out:
