anything more than a productive 3 innings from Person and it is icing on the cake imo

I like this. I didn't want to Bain start because I feel like they'll
Jump all over him the way he's been pitching. Let Bain come out of the pen later into the game.

I just hope they don't play this by a script/pitch-count. If he's in there for 3-4 innings and absolutely killing it, I hope they keep going with him until he gets hit hard (1-2 times max) or losses the zone.

And, if's he struggling in the 1st inning, I hope they pull the cord real quick. I don't see him at the same level as Lange where if he gets roughed up, he can work through it and settle down later.

Losing this first game or losing the game Saturday basically gets us the same thing. Not in the championship series. Are we gonna look back at this CWS and say it was successful because we won an extra game? No. So you have to keep in mind that you have 3 more games to play.

I think you're missing the point. The point is that you do everything you can to win tomorrow to at least give yourself a chance to get there. You can't hold back.

ETA: think of it this way. If Person goes out there and throws 2 shutout innings and Mainieri pulls him, but the bullpen gives up a lead later on, you can bet your arse Mainieri will be grilled for trying to rest Person for the weekend when we weren't guaranteed to get there.

We don't have to play matchups the whole damn game. After Person, PM will go with our next best option, which will likely be Bain.

People keep referring to it as matchups, but it's really percentages. Mainieri is playing the percentages at this point.

It's hard to ask someone to do something in the CWS that they haven't done their entire career...

I am completely not against a guy going full 120 pitch start, but if someone is, I don't see why you don't make it a starter who has done it before.

We all want the same thing, a ring.

Would go with lefty too. Poche was mowing them down until he lost his poise.

Yep, Poche pitched 3 perfect innings then he broke that up with 2 errors that lost us 4 bases and then got knocked for 2 seeing eye singles which turned in 2 unearned runs. He pitched great really through 4 innings then clearly the mistakes got to him and melted down in the 5th.

If you lose you go down playing your best players.

You can't save people for a tomorrow that may never come

and then when tomorrow (i.e. Friday/Saturday) comes, you have to pitch Person, or Johnny wholestaff anyway. So, why does it matter if you pitch them today, or Friday/Saturday? He is going to have to pitch eventually. The goal is to win three more games, not one. Basically, what you are saying is the goal is to win one game, but the real goal is to win three. If we lose Thursday, or Saturday, it doesn't make a difference.

The only goal at this point is to win tomorrow.

Then you worry about the next win

If Person can give us 3 and then Bain 3, then Bugg/Newman/Godfrey/Norman(just any of them) to close it out, I'll be confident in us taking this one. I don't really wanna look ahead, but we need Poche to keep his poise Friday and give us 6-7 good innings.

At this point im riding out anyone who is shutting the other team down, if he has given up nothing after 2, 3, 4, 5 innings...im staying with him.

Yep! Great point. There are some guys who simply don't have the stuff to go twice through the order. If we get to those guys, then pull them before it's too late or when the matchup is ugly. Other than that ride 'em until they get in trouble.

Then we'll just have to disagree on that point. It is short-sighted to not look at the potential next games when you make your decisions.

what if planning for a potential next game loses you this game? then there is no next game.

You can't win a game you don't play in but you can win a game with what's left of the pen. You've got to pitch your best to make it to the next game. Then at least you still have a chance.

Obviously you have to win the first one first, but if you can win smart vs win dumb there is still more games to be played.

If he can get through the first nine batters, we're golden. The first hint that they've figured him out...pull him. Then hopefully, we can do that for 27 outs. Keep them off balance, throw different looks at them. If it was easy everyone would still be playing. Win, lose or draw, I feel confident with our guys. Wouldn't rather any other team representing us. Geaux Tigers!
