You could argue that it didn’t become a tradition at all until Fournette took the number.

The point is it became a tradition organically. It wasn’t forced. It also became something for these kids to aspire to. Some have put it on and shined for the world. Some have put it on and wilted under the pressure of that type of honor. It’s not like 18. Yeah, the HC assigns it but it really should only go to the kid everybody knows it truly belongs to. I’m fine with that number resting on a shelf until it’s apparent who deserves to wear it.

And I don’t care how long it takes. There were 0 Captains for the Yankees between Derek Jeter and Aaron Judge for example. #7 should be about greatness. It should be iconic.

But putting it on a lineman guts the tradition. It doesn’t mean what it used to mean and there’s no way you can argue otherwise

Anyone on this site who has a strong opinion of who the numbers should go to is arrogant and has an overinflated perception of himself. You can't possibly think you know who deserves these numbers better than the coaches inside the program. They know these guys much better and see them much more than you.

Also it's CBK's program now. Not Miles, not Orgeron. CBK can let the numbers mean whatever he wants them to mean. If he wants to use #7 as a recruiting tool to lock down the state I'm all for it. CBK knows he can win a NC if he can put up the fence here with the talent he has locally.

Lastly OTs can be playmakers too. In fact you could argue they make more plays than a WR or RB as they are involved on every single snap, whether it's a run, pass, or kick and it doesn't matter who the ball goes to. They have a significant role. Be happy we have a coach valuing the Oline finally

But isn’t that what the #18 is supposed to signify?

So did they gut the tradition when they started having the team vote on it rather than having the players hand it down to each other?

Again, you’re talking about something that’s only existed in its current form for a few years. Even when Chark took the number, he had been Fournette’s roommate. I’m pretty sure the tradition as it stood last year didn’t start until Jonathan Giles.

So sure, you can say that it “doesn’t mean what it used to mean” but you could literally say that for any of the past 5 years.

ETA: I’m not even sure it was “handed down” to Fournette either considering he didn’t play with TM7, and he has said part of his reason for choosing the number was to honor the 7th ward where he grew up.

I just think it’s silly that y’all are acting like this is some huge shift when the whole thing has been constantly evolving for 10 years.

Don’t disagree that it hasn’t always lived up to the hype. I also don’t necessarily disagree with adding some parameters around it to preserve what it meant when Tyrann, Patrick and Leonard wore it. I edited my last post to mention how there were 0 Yankee captains in between Derek Jeter and Aaron Judge. And Judge was great for years before they gave it to him. I’m fine if there are long long gaps between 7’s. And maybe it’s more accurate to say giving it to a lineman is a significant shift from what it meant at its peak, which we are admittedly several years removed from at this point.

Maybe just maybe WC is the best player on the team. And it is obvious. And you are an idiot. Maybe.

First of all, absolutely so much wrong with your post.

Let’s start here:
quote:

Anyone on this site who has a strong opinion of who the numbers should go to is arrogant and has an overinflated perception of himself.

Any fan who thinks that the coach can come in and shite on tradition because “he’s the coach” must have such a sorry arse perception of himself. I’ve been an lsu fan long before Brian Kelly ever came snooping around. But whatever. You can go sit in the corner and watch like the obedient little bitch that you are.

Oh ok. You’re just retarded. They hand out checks nowadays for recruiting!! Wake up people! These kids would wear a big sack of nuts on their jersey if the NIL check is good enough.

No. Just no. Our fan base is truly ignorant. Smh

Because you can’t have a preseason top 5 ranked team with national championship aspirations if an offensive linemen is your best player. That’s not the way football works. My Lord. Having an all-American caliber linemen is incredible for our team but he’s not a playmaker. This isn’t that dense, even you simple minded folk should be able to grasp this. An interior linemen has never won the Heisman because they aren’t playmakers!
