A player is more likely to get hurt launching a shoulder into the ball carrier than by wrapping him up.

It's definitely in the back of his mind but maybe he just hasn't played that well so far.

I don't think he's saving himself for the pros. Something is terribly off about this defense. Maybe DW40 did more scheming than we knew or Aranda is believing HIS own hype. Either way, it's not just Delpit who is playing awful. It's just easier to see since he has a big 7 on his chest. Nobody on this defense deserves the number 7. Our linebacker play has been really bad also. Stingley has been one of the few who I feel is playing up to their potential.

Maybe coach should take away the 7 for a few years to get the juju off it.

I don't agree. He's actually killing his draft stock and at this point he needs to give back his #7 jersey the way Giles did. He needs to learn that he can use his arms to tackle. He's supposed to be the leader on the D and he's not rising to the challenge.

Amazing that people can't understand this.

If he is, he doesn't show it in this post game interview where he is pretty hard on himself for the missed tackles.

There is no faster way to get hurt than to play lackadaisically.

I seriously doubt Delpit is like “I’m gonna keep getting in position to make a play, but rather than wrapping up I’m going to do something even more dangerous and just lunge at the ball carrier.”

He'll get plenty of interest. But if he wants to be a top 10 pick, his play has to demonstrate he's deserving of it this year as well. You want to maximize your money. You can't protect your way into it this early in the season.

Kind of like how Arden Key “had the film”. He was a supposed top 10 lock regardless of what he did in his last year.

Exactly. This notion that the NFL will ignore the fact that you disappeared for your third season is just plain stupid.

The safest way to play safety is to be a technician in tackling. Heads up, eyes through the thighs and drive for five. Very difficult to get injured doing that. Launching yourself, arm tackling, etc., that's how you get hurt.

I believe he's read too many all American press clippings and that's gotten into his head but he's not saving himself for the NFL. When he gets hungry and starts being Grant Delpit the football player instead of everyone's all american he will be fine.

If he keeps playing like this, he'll be at LSU again next year.

Probably. But that's not really the point.

First of all, the moment you start playing to not get hurt, that's when you get hurt.

Second, Delpit started the year with a chance of being top 10, if not top 5. Do you want to know how much money that matters:

Guaranteed Money:
5. Devin White - $29.3MM
10. Devin Bush - $18.8MM
20. Noah Fant - $12.6MM
30. Deandre Baker - $9.5MM

The drop off is massive. If you are correct that Delpit is saving himself for the pros, then he is getting ridiculously bad advice.

Delpit is still hearing the footsteps of Texas receivers in his head. Livin’ rent free. He’s done mentally
