DaBeerz, whatever happened with Ricky Meador? Wasn't he the coach during that time?

yeah he was my head coach... great guy, not the greatest coach... he knew the system though and was a great recruiter. Can't really go into specifics on the board about his departure. He did save the program though... we were very close to getting the axe while I was there. It was a big deal... he lobbied hard and it worked.

I'm not sure what he's doing... don't think I've seen him in 10 years.

DaBeerz, who would you recommend that they look at for the next head coach? I'm sure swimmers know the ins and outs of a lot of different coaches around the country. I hope they look into bringing in someone that can get us to a level that competes with Georgia, Florida and Auburn! I think one positive about Alleva is that he comes from a school that competed pretty well in minor sports. I hope he brings with him that mentality of having the best coaches at all sports, not just the major ones.

Probably one of the best swimmers in the history of LSU. I think he finished 7th in the 100M Breaststroke in Olympic qualifying.

They fail to keep the top talent from Louisiana in-state which is the programs #1 problem.

This. One of my best /former teammates broke all kind of state records in swimming and he ended up going to Auburn. Louisiana isn't one of the best swimming states out there (Texas and Florida have outstanding talent) but we are not even retaining the talent we do have.

The building itself is absolute shite... the pool is very fast. All the top programs have new pools... our pool is not a very good selling point for recruits.

I've been in swim meets at Texas A&M, Auburn, and several other colleges when I was in high school. I've swam many meets at LSU growing up and our facilities are total crap when compared to other schools.

Yes, I know who it is but am not sure if they have made it public so I will leave it at that. He has ties to Baton Rouge and LSU. From what I gather, swimmers like him.

As for Auburn, I have swam in that facility several times and it is outstanding and fast. Maybe LSU officials should visit the place to see what a real facility looks like.

Ricky still lives in the Baton Rouge area. He helped Crawfish Aquatics with the Masters program after Scott Rabilais left for South Carolina. I think Ricky is working in private industry closing in on retirement or something like that. After Stickles in the late 70's came Scott Woodburn (I think that was his name) in the early 80's and the team almost imploded. Look at old yearbooks, they had less than 10 swimmers.

The program seemed to resurrect itself with Ricky and Sam took it to the top of the SEC.

Wow, he can't be more than late 40's or maybe 50!

Still hope they can get someone really good to come in and raise the level of the program and upgrade the facilities. Great facilities are really helpful in recruiting! I hope Alleva will add the Natatorium to his list of projects if he hasn't already. Just hate to hear that we've fallen so far behind!

Is this the best hire we could make? Promoting an assistant on a team that hasn't done too well the last few years? I don't know anything about the guy really, just read his bio from the link you provided. Can this guy really take us to the elite level of Florida, Georgia and Auburn? Seems like if we really wanted to compete they would've done a more complete search of proven, winning coaches. I wish the guy the best of luck and I surely hope he can improve the program a lot, but it seems like a very rushed succession.

I pretty much agree...

I was telling my two swimmers about the coaching change and we read this in his bio....

He graduated from Shippensburg with a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 1999 before receiving his master’s degree in counseling in 2001.

....my 14 year old said, "well, at least when people have a crappy swim and go see him after, he can ask,'How do you feel about that swim?'"

honestly, I wish him, and LSU swimming well... but this seems like a quick, cheap fix to a problem that is but a minor concern to an AD.....

that's exactly what they did in 99-2000 when I was there and why the program is in the current state. Pretty much BS if you ask me. It is rarely ever successful to promote an asst. coach from the old regime in any sport.

Agreed! Pretty disappointing I think if you'd like to see your team take a leap forward after an unsuccessful few years where that coach was already coaching. I was hoping Alleva would've made a positive statement here on how he intends to go after coaches for even minor sports. Perhaps this guy will get the job done but considering that the competition within our conference is as stout as it is, it would've been wise to take a good look around the country and find the best possible candidate given that level of competition. Good luck to him though, I hope he proves us wrong!!

Aren't those two completely different things?

He's around 54 or 55. Years working for state jobs gets you retired earlier. See him every once in a while around the pools.

Thanks for the info GRMN - didn't realize he was a bit older than I thought.

Auburn? Auburn's not even THE state school in Alabama and we're behind them? Pretty sad.

Erm, what? If we're talking swimming and diving we are like the most dominant team in the country on both the men's and women's sides.

Maybe I misunderstood what you were saying.
