Started with the Tulane AAU team in late 70s and moved with Bower to the Bolts when he went to Harry's. I quit to play football before they moved to St. Martins.

Maybe I misunderstood what you were saying.

Yeah, I think you did. What I was trying to say was that Auburn is not considered THE state school in Alabama as that would be the University of Alabama yet you have great facilities and an excellent swimming and diving program. LSU is THE state school in Louisiana with no other state school really competing with us in sports and our swimming and tennis facilities are crap compared to many other SEC schools. I think we're the only school in the SEC without an indoor tennis facility from what I've read, the current stadium is older than methusala, looks pretty crappy, and our swimming and diving facility doesn't even have ac and heat or decent dressing rooms. Doesn't make sense.

I swam for LSU from 04 to 08. I'm not sure if all these details are true but if Dave Geyer is the new coach you will see immediate improvements. There are a lot of things that go into being a swim coach and I can tell you he is the best person for the job. I swam for a number of coaches in my career, one that has world championship caliber experience and Dave compares to him. That's all I have for now but will provide anything I hear.

Thanks for the info HtigerO. Glad to know that some of swimmers have confidence in this guy. Why do you believe that this guy will be an improvement and that the swim team's results will see an improvement with Geyer as the head coach? Will he be able to recruit well and compete with Auburn, Florida and Georgia? If you think he will, how long do you estimate that'll take with recruiting swimmers who can compete? I just found it a bit unusual that they would name an assistant so quickly or had they been conducting a search before the resignation? Do you know why Schmitt resigned? Was it an unsolicited resignation or was there pressure to resign? Thanks for any additional info.

It was a forced resignation. Dave has handled recruiting for a number of years now and has been quite successful. The talent that LSU is able to get is not the problem. There is enough talent at LSU right now to compete and be a top 4 SEC team and a top 15 NCAA team. The training plan never worked with Schmitt, and he never changed. The results were the same every year. I don't know any details of the resignation or search or any of that. I do know that most swimmers (almost all) were not happy with how their careers ended at LSU and felt their time invested never provided the right results. This will change. Dave is an innovative coach and the reason you will see improvement is because he knows how to get the best out of the athletes (this is the biggest challenge in swimming). Recruiting gets better when you prove to prospects that they will improve when they come to LSU and be able to compete at the highest level. Facilities could improve, but I've seen better teams with worse facilities.

Thanks for all of information. I wish the best for the coach and the team and hope that the improvements come quickly for them!! It's also good to hear that there is a good amount of talent there now to compete!

HtigerO - another question while we're discussing the swimming/diving program. Why are there so many foreign athletes on swimming teams throughout college swimming programs in the US? I know that Auburn has been very successful and quite a few swimmers have gone to school there and then gone on to swim for their countries' olympic teams. There are lots of swimmers from European countries and South Africa as well from what I remember who come to swim for US universities. Just wondering if they come to train for the olympics (if it's a good training ground for the olympics), for the scholarship/free education? Interested to know. Thanks in advance!

The funniest shite I ever saw was back in the day at the Tiger Bar. Any player from the big 3 sports didn't have to pay a cover. These goons from the Swimming and Diving team were at the door and asked to pay a cover and the boy said, "I'm on the swim team, man."

You laugh but depending on the year you are talking about... The swim team had full run there. When I went on my recruiting trip, got in no problem at 17... They had a keg in the corner for the swimmers. I never paid cover there

"I'm not sure if all these details are true but if Dave Geyer is the new coach you will see immediate improvements"
Ditto on that...look what he's done for Tiger Aquatics, the program owned by Schmitt. Geyer has led that team in 2 years to top 3 finishes in the state from past best finishes of 6th and lower. Scmitt had absolutely zero interest in the club team except to show up on deck for an hour or 2 at the state championship meets. Hell even when Ripple shows up on deck at least he stays til the end of the session! Geyer knows how to coach kids, they respect him, and he isn't afraid to make changes when results warrant them. Geyer has produced 14+ sectional qualifiers under his direction from a mere 2 or 3 of the past as well as a handful of Jr nationalists from none. If Schmitt would have put the athletes first instead of his ego, both programs would have seen better results with Geyer at the helm. Schmitt did nothing but frustrate his staff...look at the history of assistants...he brought in Morgan (forget last name) who left mid season, then Sean Schimmel, who left on his own, as well as at least one female assistant that left as well. Geyer has established himself as knowledgable effective and an all around good guy that's well-respected by the club swimming community as well as the LSU Athletic Administration. If he gets a crack at the head coaching position it would be well deserved and you could expect significant changes to the program.

I remember reading a while back that new swimming and tennis facilities were part of Alleva's plan. After they finish the basketball practice facility I think new facilities for smaller sports is next on the agenda.

I am thinking that if a swimming thread actually made it to 4 pages on here, then the miracle of a new aquatics facility COULD happen!! Who would've imagined??

Dave took a job in Lafayette coaching COLA last Monday. On Tuesday, he resigned and went back to Baton Rouge.

Yes, he will be the coach and he may be a good diamond in the rough that no one knows about on a national level. And there will be some really good swimmers at TAQ looking to join LSU if Dave is still there when they graduate high school. (eg: Smacker Miles - Les Miles daughter). Hopefully, Dave will recruit Louisiana better than Adam. Adam seemed to have no interest at all.

According to a few of my friends on the swim team, they think the move was best for the program. They believe that Adam was not the best coach on the staff and kind of handicapped his coaches, saying he was more focused on only sprinters, like he was at LSU. The team he swam on in 1987 was the only SEC championship in LSU history - he won the 50 free and their 200-free relay set the SEC record.

Apparently, Alleva did not invoke the Jim Hawthorne standard and keep him because he bleeds purple and gold.
