It is past time to do away with these bowl games.

I loved the old bowl game system. I thought the old 4-team playoff was great too. But then the bowls got diminished by opt outs. The 12-team playoff helped fix that problem. On the flip side, the CFP has rendered all of the non CFP bowl games to be junior varsity games.

If those players are being paid - they should be playing.

I think its officially time to stop the tradition.

More like choose the right players to represent those numbers would be my response at first glance. But then again the whole landscape of the sport has changed. That has to be accounted for.

Kids get scholarships and skip class all the time. They even quit going altogether; the school does not ask for their money back.

So now you’re changing the goalpost? I’m establishing they get paid by scholarship and by NIL they get for competing for that school in that sport. If they don’t compete and have their likeness on display and make bowl appearances etc, they don’t get paid.

Would you accept a job with no salary and only a per diem? That's about what the scholarship, housing and meals add up to based on the millions the university gets year to year. The education "compensation" myth is long dead. Housing and food are paid by taxpayers and no longer an accepted means of compensation in major college sports. At this point its a budgeted in expense labeled "the cost of doing business". Pennies to the university

What myth? Tuition, housing, and meal plans all have a dollar value. I’ll tell the bank about that myth and ask for my student loan money back.

Their are in 12 teams as of now if the playoffs. So every team that doesn't make it season is over if it were up to you.Nah I enjoy sports to much and the players that participate want to win.Now I will say to cut down the number of bowls.

Me? You said they are getting paid to play. I pointed out they were not, they are, in fact, getting paid to allow an entity to use their name, image, or likeness. You then brought up scholarships, to which I pointed out that students who get scholarships skip class and sometimes quit going to class. Some students drop out right before finals, which is no different than a football player "dropping out" before the bowl game.

Right, which they did this season.

That is completely up to the NIL sponsor, and they did compete this season. They are not getting paid to compete; they are getting paid because their name is recognizable, because they have competed at a high level. At least that is how it has been sold. We all know it is effectively pay for play, but until an employment contract is in place, everyone pretends it isn't.

I know Germans, but it's important to remember that the bowl TV contracts bring in millions of dollars to the conference and the schools. This is vital revenue to support the universities and not just the Athletic Departments. As this new NIL system continues to evolve, the bowls retain their importance.
