"It's probably the only time in my life I was intimidated by the crowd." - Former ALl American and Pro Football Hall of Famer, Ronnie Lott, on LSU's game against USC in 1979 at Tiger Stadium He also had these comments regarding the 1979 USC vs. LSU game in Tiger Stadium: "A lot of great players have played in that stadium, but I don't know if any team has walked into that stadium and dealt with what we went through. From the time we landed to the time we left, I don't know if a team has ever gone through that." "I haven't been in an event like that at any level of football. Out of all the games I've ever played in, I've never been in anything like that, and I am including my Super Bowls in that assessment."

Of all the ones previously posted, this one's gotta be the best. When you consider WHO is saying it, WHAT team he was playing for, and that it was the scariest atmosphere he's ever been in INCLUDING on the pro level.............that speaks VOLUMES.

With that being said, the loudest, craziest game I've ever been to HAS TO BE the 1997 Florida game. After that game, I felt like I had run a marathon.

From us old-timers - check the SI article on the 1973 Alabama game, p. 32:

And this, which contains my favorite quote, from Brad Budde, USC '79 (I was there):

My favorite article about a visitor's experience:

quote:

That voodoo's real. When the "Four Corners Salute" gets cranking, it's like listening to a 747 made entirely of fired clay crashing into a field of shattered glass. Getting a snap off effectively is in itself a game ball-worthy achievement. Combined with the orgy going on outside the stadium for five miles in any direction, it's the gold standard for any other college gameday experience. Any of them. It is peerless in terms of demonstrated intensity, lunacy, commitment, flair, and menace. At several points in the day, we were convinced we were going to be killed, injected with creole butter, and thrown in a deep fryer...but only in the most festive and accommodating of ways, of course.

"there is a 25-yard-long sign that reads, "Welcome to Death Valley'' mounted below the pressbox. Those are the little touches at which LSU excels. Most schools wouldn't even put up such a name. Others would just say, "Death Valley" and leave it at that. But not LSU. Here, it's "Welcome to Death Valley." That's beautiful. It's like descending into Hell and finding a sign that reads, "Satan Invites You to Enjoy Eternal Damnation."

-Jim Caple

The difference between a night game and a day game at Tiger Stadium is that at night you can smell the bourbon on the field.

SVP- "everything they eat is fried. I don't know what boudin is but I want some now. When they wake up in the morning and brush their teeth, they don't use water, they pour a little bourbon on it."

This was a great post - I don't care how many times I see similar stuff. This makes me proud and honored to be from a long line of Tiger Fans. The best ever.

I don't have a favorite quote - all of the ones mentioned here are equally awesome.

I don't get what's so funny?
It has nothing to do with the outcome of the game. Just listening to it and knowing that a national audience heard that gives me goosebumps.

I love this thread. I'm getting goosebumps.

One to contribute that most of you haven't heard is by comedian Bill Burr on his podcast. I saw him in New Orleans the night before Bama came to town last year. The way he described his experience was awesome.. He started off not really interested in who won, and by game time he was screaming at Bama fans. At the end he was completely devastated, completely blown away, and surprised at how much of an LSU fan he had become.

Here's the link... Maybe I'll listen to it again and type out some of the quotes:

Memorable moments that have always stuck with me:

2000 beating no 11 Tennessee in overtime courtesy of a 25-yard touchdown pass from Rohan Davey to Robert Royal. I believe it was the last time we rushed the field.

2002 Devery Henderson breaking arm while making his eighth TD grab of the season just before halftime against the Rebels ... Underwent surgery a day later and had 14 screws and two plates placed in his arm. Just insane.

Also, cant remember or find the game but reed or clayton had a one arm diving catch for a td that was one of the best ive seen (diving across, not down, the field).

Unless you were in Tiger Stadium, there is just no way possible to describe what that experience was like.

Usually a big play just takes the air out of the stadium. After that UGA touchdown, the entire crowd just start yelling, "L-S-U! L-S-U!". Loud and sustained. Players on both sidelines were just looking around dazed thinking, "W-T-F is happening?".

I've never seen anything like that.

Same here. I have seen alot of magical moments, usually on the field. But nothing tops this crowd wise. It was as if the crowd put the on its back and said come on boys your not losing today.

Was there as well in the student section. The immediate response to the long TD of "LSU, LSU" was amazing. I was horse for a week, and I haven't seen a game that can hold a candle to that one. Tiger stadium at its finest

" You know that there's a live tiger on campus at LSU. And that they parade it around before games. And that you're going to see it. But seeing it registers the lunacy of the whole event at a level that only the visual can really deliver: it's a live goddamn tiger in its own bizarre cage/car, staring out at all the fresh meat it could possibly ever want from behind mesh and generally looking very, very unimpressed with the whole affair. The crowd loses all sense when it arrives, bringing LSU pregame out of the realm of mere "pep" and into a conflation of sport and primitive totem worship."

SB Nation Road Trip

Favorite crowd moment was the 2007 Stanford over USC announcement, the loudest noise I've ever heard.

A different take since all of mine have been mentioned. VT in 2007 defined LSU football and fans for me. It was a few months after the shooting. Before the game, VT fans were treated to the pure LSU hospitality that sometimes gets overshadowed by bad stories. Pregame, a nice tribute to the victims with a respectful silence and standing O for the parachutes. Then we proceeded to totally destroy them on the field. Typical early top ten match up atmosphere. Just a great night to be a tiger in the stadium.

Right after the game, it was back to falling over to show the visitors a good time. Just a great day that represented the good of LSU, including the team.
