Liability hazard? Insurance reasons? Maybe they had to adjust their policy after the hurricane?

west end zone being built.

Lets see...not only does the field run North-South, the West Side was built first in the 70's and the east side was completed in the 2000's

XIV, you're always a douche. Are you saying we shouldn't bring our kids? Just cause mommy and daddy didn't play with you doesn't mean you should be a prick everyday. The kids love the mounds and that's that. I can't believe you'd say that the campus is for grownups you arse. I'll tell Times Grill to shut down their Kidzone. Oh and the bookstore better stop selling kids sizes, wouldn't want the grownups to get mad. fricker.

One possible explanation: LSU trying to prevent a lawsuit - its bound to happen sooner or later. I remember back in the 90's somebody sued LSU because they fell off the small brick benches/walls that outlined the planted areas on the northside of TS. Apparently they were too old to support an adult and collapsed. They were all removed immediately after.

Those small brick walls were built in 1982/83 after Courtney Smoak (spelling?), a freshman coed, got run over while she was laying down on one of the Indian Mounds late at night/early one morning. A guy decided to do some offroading and topped one of the mounds and didn't see her until it was too late.

Sad, tragic, and true.

Last year i took my then 5 yearold to her first LSU game, and letting her run up and down the mounds a few times was part of her initiation into gameday life.

I am planning on taking my 4 yearold to the Tulane game for her first game, and she already asked if she can run up the Indian Mounds.

It's a rite of passage for future tiger fans....

Hopefully it's just a tempory reason they are fencing off the mounds......
A lot of money is spent on research regarding the mounds and other things like that. It behooves the University to fence them off.

This is similar to when they put up those black rails blocking the Oaks so people wouldn't park under the trees. Millions of dollars are spent every year so those oaks look good and healthy year-round. It was to LSU's benefit to block those off, even if it pisses off fat asses who show up to campus seven times a year for a game.

The football crowd needs to know its place. Aesthetics and beautification of the campus is a higher priority than making sure kids get to play on the mounds or that people don't have to walk an extra half mile to get to the stadium.

Not everybody at LSU likes to look at football, but everybody at LSU likes looking at the oaks, and everybody at LSU likes to have the mounds preserved as well as possible. Fencing off the mounds is the way to go.

Courtnay, no e...it was after November of 1984, when she was killed.

Let the little ones have fun. It's better that way.

There are too many people that bring their children and then get shitfaced drunk and don't watch their children. Then have the nerve to drive their children home while they are shitfaced drunk. I am sure they are referring to those people.

First, I have two small kids and they love to play on the Indian Mounds.

HOWEVER, none of you have mentioned that maybe the grass just needs to be protected for a bit. We haven't had rain in a while and maybe the tops are too dry and the roots have given a bit. If this happens and today's and tomorrow's expected rain soaks the mounds, then it will just turn in to one big mud lump as the grass gives. Just a thought.

For more than 75 years, LSU has been at its present location. While the campus has seen many changes, the Indian mounds, located on the northwest side of campus, have remained virtually untouched.

In the 1980s, scientists from the LSU Museum of Natural Science, the Department of Agronomy, and the Department of Geography & Anthropology collected soil samples from the bases of the mounds and discovered that they were part of a group of Archaic mound complexes located throughout the state.

Over a dozen of these mound complexes have been identified and more are likely to be recognized in the future. These mound groups are older than any in North America, Mesoamerica, and South America, and predate the construction of the great Egyptian pyramids.

Built more than 5,000 years ago by Native Americans, the mounds at LSU were part of a much larger trend. Native Americans built large mounds in the eastern part of North America for many reasons. Archaeologists think Native American mounds served as ceremonial and social centers. To date, archaeologists do not know the exact purpose the LSU Indian Mounds, but the structures do not appear to have been burial places, temples or houses. Researchers believe the mounds may have been symbols of group identity where peoples living in scattered bands congregated from time to time for religious and ceremonial purposes, and to feast, dance, exchange information, and select mates.

The western side of both LSU mounds were tested in 1985 to provide information prior to the damage that would result from the construction of brick retaining walls. Currently, the structures and artifacts within are protected from vandals and treasure hunters. In 1999, the Indian Mounds at LSU were listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Sounds like LSU is beginning to change a hell of alot.
It all started with the BIG money with season tickets and the west endzone being built.
Greed kilss tradition!!!!

If you don't like where the state of LSU football is going, then go be a Tulane or ULL fan. And don't let the door hit you in the arse on the way out. You can't have a consistent top 10 program unless you are willing to pay the price. That's just the state of college football today, grampa.
