Take the money, then finish your degree if baseball doesn’t work out. Pretty simple.

Every player the nationals took from 6-10 signed for $20k. He wasn’t “low-balled” They did what they had to do to sign the rest of the class.

They gotta do something about that. Like if you are offered below slot value and your eligibility is all used up, you get to become a free agent before signing stuff like this. Players shouldn't be punished for staying an extra year in school to finish a degree

Blame the MLBPA

Lol. The money they saved on Dugas is probably going to Crews signing bonus.

You legit thinks crews has enough to dictate how an MLB organization runs it’s shite? Dude hasn’t even played his first game as a rookie.

Either sign it and play ball or go get a 9-5 and baseball is done.

They low balled Dugas. That’s insulting.

The Braves signed every college senior they drafted for 20k. I think there were 5 of them.

ETA: Brain fart. I should’ve said The Nationals. My bad.

It's a messed up system they got in place. Minimum salary for a AAA ball player is $35,000. Lowest is $19,800 in Single-A. If you are in a minor league dugout, you are worth more than that just based on the ticket sales alone. Dudes are out there playing in front of 10,000 people on the weekends and having to mow lawns for extra money after practice

For a sport called the American pastime, that doesn't sound very American to me

Fair point. Undrafted players can sign for up to $125K. But MLB really doesn’t care.

If a MLB team couldn’t draft Dugas to save slot money on another top 10 pick then he probably would have went undrafted and signed somewhere for roughly the same amount so does it really matter?

I get that they agreed prior and Gavin wouldn’t do this, but what’s stopping a player from going back on their deal and demanding more? The team would lose the $337,050 savings they got from signing Gavin at $20,000.

Not in the 5 seconds it took to sign his name though.
