John Williams was a stud recruit from Los Angeles. He was the best player on the 86 Final Four team. As far as I know there was never anything proven or even an investigation )like Newton last year), but there were always rumors about his recruitment. SI did a piece about some shady agent or coach or something that he was tied to.
I don't want to burst anyone's bubble, but that kind of stuff goes on almost every where and was probably worse back in the 70's and 80's. A friends dad who was a big A&M boster said basketball was extremely dirty in those days.

This is what I remember about the Harvey recruitment. As the story goes he was committed to A&M until signing day. He said that got sick and tired of all of the A&M stuff from classmates and others. Said he couldn't walk thru the halls without ppl talking up A&M and giving A&M cheers. By the time he walked to the podium he had changed his mind. He walked up and just said "LSU". He then went on to say ( not sure if it was the same day or not ) how much he hated A&M and hated their mascot dog "reveille" and how sorry he was.

I remember that Tiger Rag did an interview with Harvey during his freshman year, and they asked him about his home town. He said that he was glad to get out of there and was happy to be in BR. His famous quote was, "There's nothing to do there but raping, robbing and stealing stuff."

Classic HW! This was a quote from a later interview that appeared in a magazine I think--maybe Sports Illustrated. He said something like "and that dog they got, Reveille, I can't stand that dog. That's a sorry dog." Too funny!

Wasn't there an issue with one of our coaches buying him a Whataburger on a recruiting trip?

Some aggie is saying alot of illegal shite went on about him coming to LSU instead of A&M.
some aggie's are nothing but texas puke. went to an xmas party loaded with aggies satnite at an old (agggie) friends house and it was the same ole ignorant shite. first it was our kids had dreadlocks....then it was our kids had gold teeth....then it was we cheat in recruiting....then it was we give our kids grades....blah, blah freakn' blah. I just sipped on my cocktail and suggested to them that when their program gets off the coaching carosel and becomes anything "more than a speedbump" to real football programs that I will begin to take what they say seriously. a couple of wives laughed...a couple of faces got red and my wife suggested we go find a restaurant where we could have an "intelligent" conversation. we split and left them to share their butthurt and bitch at their wives.

HW was the last blue chip back we got until Kevin Faulk in '95. Things went downhill when Archer took over.

Johnnie Hector was much more suspcious, but nobody has tlaked about these ancient recruiting controversies til now...
Get ready, SEC, for the Aggies, who are bigger whiners and more delusional than Arkies.
They even continue to talk about the myth that LSU owes them 100k for cancelling the series way back when.
Do not underestimate this aberrant talk. These people are still seriously wounded about these perceived, but fictional tresspasses decades ago.
These are not well balanced people.

forget harvey williams -- the recruiting battle between A&M and SMU over Eric Dickerson was epic.

...I still can't find that damn book "A Payroll to Meet" that goes over SMU's downfall. amazon lists it for a hundred bucks or so.

i remember him whippin' up his white girlfriend while he was at LSU. They swept it under the rug and he went on to the NFL. He lived in apartments across Lee from Mike Anderson's.

What every was paid was to much. (if any) Only remember one good game. Torn his knee up in the dome and he was looking great in that game.
