Noooo! But he did throw the shot in his warm ups with out the usual "shot put wind-up." He did this on his way to anchor the 440 yr relay.
He also ran anchor in 880 relay and 100 and 220 - usually won at all.
Cannon picked up a shot put, heaved it like a baseball and launched it a state record 57 feet, 4 inches.

BC was fast, LF wa s as well....neither had elite speed.
I would say Billy Cannon had elite speed for his day if 9.4 is correct. Usain Bolt ran a 9.14 1OO yard dash in may 2011. The official world record was 9.3 from 1948 to 1962 when it went to 9.2. , The high school hand timed record of 9.2 was set in 1972
BC must have been given a pretty generous hand timer if he really clocked 9.4

He would have been disqualified for throwing it like a baseball.

I didn't read the entire thread but could someone explain what happened to his NFL career. He was a great RB in college and his first two years in the NFL, then gets moved to TE where he was OK but not used much. WTF happened?
I'm just reading on wiki that he injured his back during the 1963 season and then got traded and was moved to TE. So is the back injury what caused the move and was he to injured to carry the load at RB? Just seems a waste of a great talent.

Yes, the back injury is what caused the move to TE. His speed, strength, and receiving ability made him an all-pro. Hell of an athlete. I’ve heard that he had to play with a back brace.

I'm going to say no. The pool of athletes in the 50's is nowhere near what it is in modern day football.
This is incorrect. Cannon was a transcendent talent. He had the size and speed...and the toughness to play in any era.

I am not being argumentative and I appreciate the positive comments and lore of Cannon, but I was there - watched virtually ever Istrouma track meet from 1955 - 1958.
Also saw most of LSU meets 1958 - 1961. To see a guy 6' 1" & 200# pick up the shot to compete with guys who were considerably over 220# was amazing! One of the guys I saw him compete against was named Errol Linden (didn't verify spelling) who went on to play offensive tackle for Vikings. That day Cannon had to get serious, come back from preparing for 440 anchor, take off sweats, get warmed throw in formal shot style. He did best Linden and had couple of less than cordial comments to Linden also.
He was a great athlete and had lots of swagger and backed up swagger with performance.

He was before my time. Plus I attended BR High. So you and I probably will never get along if you attended Istrouma..
I attended many many meets as well. I still try to make the Texas Relays every year, but had to miss the last 2. Kind of sucked because of little Duplantis.

Also, Bobby Morrow of Abiline Christian was co-holder with Dave Sime at one time. The German Sprinter someone refered to was Armin Hary...he won the 1960 Olympic 100 meter dash.

Had lots of friends from Baton Rouge High. During late 50's & early 60's Istrouma & Baton Roige High were not great only rivals but also probably the two best teams in the state. BRH had great players then Warren Rabb, Gus Kinchen, Don Norwood, Joe Harris & Wendell Harris - Wendell was one the most versitale atheletes I ever saw. He played & excelled at football, basketball, baseball & track - superb!
That kid Duplantis is another "one of a kind." I remember when a high schooler in Arizona vaulted over 15' for first time; now Duplantis is damn near 20' & just out of high school!! Amazing!

Why? Because he was white? He also ran on cinder tracks. Didn’t have the coaching and full time training and nutrician that Bolt had. I’m not saying he was in Bolts class, but what I am saying you never saw with your own eyes how fierce of a competitor this guy was and his refusal to lose. If you think about Michael Jordan or Larry Bird as never quitting or losing at a spitting contest, Cannon was that and more.
He had world class speed during his time and that is a fact.
He would have smoked most of the LSU football players today and was as strong as an ox.
You people never cease to amaze me how small minded you are. This guy was an athlete that transcended time.
Next you’ll say that Pistol couldn’t have played today. Freaking joke that a 6’5-6” ball handling and shooting machine wouldn’t compete in this no defense arse league.
