Ran into him at the airport in New Orleans many years ago.
Just said hello coach.
He shook my hand and looked me in the eye with the most genuine smile.

Dale was Awesome. I met him as an 18 year old kid in Baton Rouge for the State Baseball Quarterfinals. I was in awe.

Back in 2006, LSU just had lost to UCLA in Indy. Couple friends and I are walking a little ways back behind an unknown older couple down the street back to our parking garage. Up ahead come some drunken LSU fans who are chanting towards us (or at least so I thought towards us in purple and gold at the time). However the couple in front of us stops and the older gentleman says “well look at this crew”. It was Dale Brown in front of us.
He briefly exchanged pleasantries with us all. I didn’t want to “bother” him so kept walking ahead alone. I thought he had stayed back but he quickly joined up to me and kept conversation going. He asked me point blank if I thought the LSU team would fly back home or stay for the championship game on Monday night.
I told him if I was Brady that I’d make the team stay and watch so that they know what it feels like to watch the other team cut down the nets and celebrate. He responds “yep, that’s what I did”.
I was proud. I’ll never forget that. We said a few more words , shook hands , and wished each other well. And went our ways.
I’ll always remember that exchange.

Coach Brown is type of guy that can talk you into attacking a fort of soldiers 3 million strong with 300 guys with bow and arrows.

I love the Dale brown stories. My sister had one of the worse cases of GBS and It was Dale Brown who made the call to get her admitted into the LSU Hospital in Shreveport because they LSU had one of the nation’s best doctors on GBS. Dale developed a relationship with my sister who worked in the LSU Athletic department during his last two years as coach.
Tell me the stories on Dale Brown’s recruitment of Shaq. Would love to know a few of them.

I personally met Dale Brown walking in front of PMAC the weekend after my graduation in 1983. He was with his family heading to an event and stopped to take a picture with me and talked with my for about 10 minutes about BB, life and my future as a recent grad. One on one and truly connected. His family had to call him away. Fast forward to 2014 when he came to visit his daughter in our town and gave a motivational speech at our church. I connected again with him and told him that story and how much it meant for the head BB coach to take the time from his schedule to visit with me as a recent grad. We visited for another 30 minutes and it was like he was family catching up on old times. He's touched a lot of lives in many good ways.

About 15 years ago, I was putting together an LSU room and I called Coach Brown to see if he would sign something for me. I thought I was going to get a secretary and the run around. Coach Brown gets on the phone and starts talking and says come on over.
I did and he greeted me like we were pals. Sat down and he told me all kinds of stories. He was looking for everything he could to give me. Picture of Shaq, Coach Brown’s book, autographed a pic of him with a nice note, a huge desk paper weight with his name on it etc. Obviously was a meeting I will never forget. Not because of the stuff, but because of the kind of person he is.

When I was a young man of 25 years old, I was living 600 miles from home(BR) when I was diagnosed with a type of cancer that had a 20% survival rate. I got a copy of his book, Don’t Count Me Out. After reading this, it set my mind right to where I could muster up the courage to fight this battle. I sent Coach Brown a letter thanking him for having published that book and how it helped me. Not only did he write me back, he sent me 2 tickets to the LSU game that was coming up in a couple of weeks. As fate would have it, I ran into him at a hotel in town the day of the game. Talked for about 10 minutes. Never forget this man as long as I live. Which is 56 years and counting.

My brother owns a company which has a portion based in Minot, ND (where Dale Brown is from). To make things brief theyve gotten to know each other over the years and this year for Christmas one of my presents was that my brother and I got to go to the UGA game and sit with (in front of) Dale Brown for the evening, tickets provided by Coach Brown of course.
B-Ball related, he told me two things that night that have resignated.
1- This is the best LSU team in the 22 years since he had retired
2-LSU doesnt have the best 1-3 in the country, but 1-8, nobody is better
Beyond that, we talked about life and he mostly asked questions about me, my family, my brother and took time to introduce us to different people. Collis Temple, the family of Bob Pettit, David Manship, etc and because he told me to make sure I brought business cards, he asked me to give one to everyone I met.
The evening was truly special and something I won't soon forget.
I went to the Arkansas game the following week and even though Coach Brown had e-mailed me (he's really into sending mass emails) and I could have thanked him again electronically, I wanted to hand deliver a thank you note so I did. Before the game he was talking to John Brady courtside right before he walked to his seats, I saw him there so I walked over and mid conversation with Brady, he looks at me, smiles and says..."There he is. How are you? How's your wife _____ and daughter _____? Come meet Coach John Brady."
He really is a special person.

Some legit CSBs in this thread

I normally don't get into this stuff on T Droppings, but here goes. I was a student trainer for his team in the 80's and travelled for several years. I loved road trips with Coach Brown. I have too many stories for this thread, but one particular trip was to Wash DC, and he literally took the team on a bus tour for hours, and it was awesome. However, half of the team was asleep on the bus which made me feel very guilty. I approached Coach Brown and thanked him for the tour, and he simply said "You have to understand, most of these young men will never have another chance to see things like this..." It was just a simple, great example of his personal character. The older you get in life, the more you understand his message.

Best part about this thread? Not a single negative post. Yeah, I know, some a-hole will jump in with his negative take, trying to be the cool guy, but deep down everyone knows how much Dale meant to LSU.
And there it is ... thanks M-train for being that guy.

I don’t know of any real proof of illegal compensation of athletes by Coach. But I do know of real proof of his helping people.
I agree with that. Dale Brown is a big-hearted man. He coached in an era in which you HAD to pay players if you were going to compete with the Kentuckys. I responded to an implication that now it’s about money, whereas then it wasn’t. It was.

People used to say he was this great motivator but wasn't much of a X's and O's coach. I don't really agree with that. I think he had so many irons in the fire that basketball might not have gotten the attention from him that other coaches put into it.
I'm not really a Dale guy, and I have my reasons, but I agree with this 100% with this statement you made Ponchy.
I can tell you one thing, Dickie V will mention his name twice as much as WFW's today and it will be 10 minutes tops before he begins to rant about what a travesty it is the court is not named after Dale.
To your point also, he has done many good works for people, more than I ever will.
