And the number of receptions, the surrounding cast that each of these guys had, the abilities of their respective QBs and the nature of the game at the time must also be taken into account.
It's an interesting question, but those who think Chase wins this "hands down" either show recency bias or a lack of knowledge about Reed's body of work.

My eyeballs tell me Ja'marr, and I don't really need anything else, but his 2019 season doesn't hurt the case at all. His body control and awareness in space was the best I've ever seen at LSU for sure.

Maybe best. Maybe not.

Was Burrow throwing to other guys?

Was LSU even a passing team in days gone by?

Who else had Jefferson and Clyde to help loosen things up?

Heck I could make the argument that JJ was the best.

You do realize Chase played with a QB that threw for 60 TDs right?

Jefferson caught 18 and even Marshall had 13.

Reed accounted for well over half of our receiving yards and just under half of the TDs from Rohan.

Seeing a WR absolutely shred SEC defenses in 2001 the way J Reed did was unfathomable. A WR won the Heisman catching 23 TDs the year after Chase caught his 20.

The two performances aren’t really comparable but I can assure you every defense we played in 2001 had one goal, stopping Josh Reed, and he was held under 120 yards only twice all season. One of which was the SECCG when our QB was knocked out in the first half and we just grinded out the win with a running QB that wasn’t prepared to throw the ball.

There is no question the 2019 team was much more difficult to defend and made it virtually impossible to focus on stopping any one player.

I doubt Josh Reed saw man coverage even once the entire season in 2001.

I feel bad for anyone that wasn’t old enough to witness J Reed. It was Mathieu level domination.

ETA: He also had over 1100 yards and 10 TDs as a sophomore before his real breakout, so his impact on the program was far beyond Chase’s imo.

Hypothetically, if you're an NFL GM, and you have an opportunity to draft any LSU receiver, who are you taking over Ja'Marr? And why?

Have Boutte on the 2019 team with Burrow and he's better than Chase.

I said what I mother fricking said.

Damn Ja'Marr is showing out - just took an 8 yd slant 74 extra yards for an 82 yd TD against the Ravens' D. Grown man football.

Nope. Boutte is just playing with a cast of WRs that aren't close to his NFL talent level (at least right now). Chase demanded catches in a room crowded with NFL stars. I mean think about it, Helaire had 55 catches.

Josh Reed 2001 season

1,976 yards and 9 tds in 13 games

Chase in 2019 season

1,780 yards and 20 tds in 14 games

The most impressive thing about Reed’s season is that he did it in an era where offense wasn’t king. Still old school 3 yards and a cloud of dust football. And he still put up those numbers.

Thanks…I never even thought of that being available. Gotta love how he has never lost his south Louisiana accent!
