re: Is Matt Barkley better than JJ

Barkley is a top 5 future NFL pick. even as a TRUE freshman, he is more polished than Jordan Jefferson
This. As far as early hype for the Heisman, let's not forget that Barkley came out of high school as the Player of the Year and the no. 1 rated pro style QB. That alone gives him early name recognition at the least. The fact he started as a true freshman (a first at USC) says a lot about his future development and potential at a school known for producing high powered offenses and Heisman winning QBs in recent years. Thus, it comes down to natural talent and great measurables, being in a great program which will develop his talent, and past recognition as the best in the nation for his age group.
Early Accolades from SI

Why is Barkley considered an early Heisman candidate?
Being the USC QB pretty much automatically puts you in the race. The program, the exposure, the huge fan base. Not saying it's right, but it is what it is.

Barkley is better but hopefully JJ is the better champion

ESPN is in love with USC,
This will happen every year to USC, they get all the preseason hype then lose a game to a washington or Standford ruins national championship run, and Heisman run

And what exactly has he done in college to support this? Your main argument is how great he was in high school, and that doesn't mean shite unless he can do it at the college level. What makes it even worse is that he's playing in the worst BCS conference and can't even come up with numbers better than JJ's. He's done absolutely nothing to merit a spot on the early Heisman watch list. I'm not saying that he can't work his way on it by next year or his junior year, but as of now he's nowhere close to being on it.

High school doesn't matter.

Did you see USC's quarterbacks this year? They were fricking TERRIBLE. He got the spot by default.

Is it just that ESPN loves USC or they hate LSU?
Other than Herbstreit, ESPN doesn't hate LSU. They simply play the numbers (viewers) and the west coast wins out --at least in theory.
If Jefferson tears it up next fall and Barkley doesn't, they'll come around.
I for one think JJ just might.

Herb was stunned with the LSU beat down of OSU. I watched a tape of the Sportscenter after that game and he looked like a deer caught in the headlights. Then, you had his call of Miles going to Michigan and the fallout when that didn't happen.
So, I don't know bout his hating LSU, but he does appear to have something in his craw bout us. imo

Yes Barkley is better, he will play in the NFL while JJ won't.

yes, and the trickle down effect it had on our offense this season was undisputed.

Not saying JJ isn't good, but that 62.1% is made up of one hell of a lot of wide outs to standing WR behind line of scrimmage.

USC does NOT run a complicated offense this year. They are the benefactors of a great O-Line and a very good running game. In the passing game they run boots, nakeds, and waggles, a bunch of simple 3 step game reads, and a handful of 5 step concepts that they sometimes pair with play action. it would be complicated for a high school.
You can get away with that if your OL opens gargantuan holes in the run game like theirs does. I can't stand SC but watching their OL block inside zone is a thing to behold.
because our OL and skill player run blocking is a little down from the last couple of years it has been necessary for us to ask more of JJ than SC has asked of Barkley. I think Barkley should be very good by the middle of next year, but so should JJ.

Barkley is greater because JJ didn't have to face those tuff Pac 10 defenses.
Posted on 12/30/09 at 7:12 pm to Simplemaaan
Barkley. Lets not pretend. JJ has the potential to be a fine QB. Matt Barkley will play in the NFL, probably contend for a Heisman.
Posted on 12/30/09 at 7:32 pm to RogerTheShrubber
the correct answer is that Barkley plays for USC. If Barkley played for any other school in the country no one would have mentioned the name Barkley in the same sentance as Heisman.

Put Barkley at Texas, OU, Alabama and he would win a Heisman. NFL don't care where he plays, will still be a top 5 pick. Has special talent.

of course the NFL doesn't care where he plays, thought we were talking about his name being menitioned already as a heisman canidate. If He played at OU or alabama this past season with the season he actually had he wouldn't be being mentioned as a heisman canidate.
