It's amazing after 14 straight wins, there are so many people smarter than Mainieri.
Exactly. I have no problem with Ross getting the start tonight.

OMAHA, Neb. -- After winning the series opener of the CWS Finals, LSU enters Game 2 against Texas with some flexibility from a pitching standpoint.
LSU coach Paul Mainieri said last night that he'd think about starting right-handed pitcher Anthony Ranaudo on just three days rest.
Well, we caught up with Coach Mainieri this morning.
The Tigers are starting right-hander Austin Ross.
"I'm going with Ross and here's the thinking behind it. After watching how Louis Coleman and Chance Ruffin wilted in the heat last night, I just figured Ranaudo coming back on three days rest in this heat would be a mistake," Mainieri said. "What would be the use of starting him and only getting four or five innings."
Ross enters the contest with a 5.09 ERA in 81 1/3 innings. He also has struck out 76 and 21 and teams are hitting him at a .300 clip.
Mainieri also discussed reliever Matty Ott's available. Ott threw 49 pitches in three innings of relief work in the series opener.
"We'll have to see how Ott feels later tonight, but we'll see if we can piece things together," Mainieri said. "If we get a chance to win at the end, there's also a chance we'll throw Ranaudo out there. We don't want Ranaudo to get exhausted on three days rest."
The Tigers and Longhorns butt heads at 6 p.m., central, tonight on ESPN.

I think Jungmann was gonna start game 2 no matter what the situation, so I dont think our decision would have anything to do with matchups. The decision to start Ross today most likely results from Ranaudo needing one more day of rest. If Ranaudo was already at 4 days rest, Im pretty sure he would be getting the start...but thats jmho.

It's time for our bats to bring home the trophy. We should be able to out score Texas.
If we hit the ball like we can, we should win tonight. If not, we'll have our ace ready for tomorrow.
Right on!

im guessing its more along the lines of getting Ranaudo another days rest, not who Texas is going to "hopefully" have to pitch along the way.
Obviously this is the case. A fully rested Ranaudo would be starting. Ranaudo isn't close to full rest, nor will he be by tomorrow.

Austin Ross steps up and pitches the game of his life tonight! Tiger fans in Omaha, Lift him up. You guys were awesome last night...made it sound like the game was a home game. Good Job!

Yes he should. Why take a greater risk of getting a less than 100% Ranaudo? Risk greatly outweighs the reward.
he has to be close to 100% though.

Ranaudo on 3 days rest with a heat index of over 100 degrees is a risky when you aren't facing elimination and could eliminate your pitching advantage for game 3 if it doesn't work out.
id rather go for the win today though.
And i like Ross, i just think a layoff may hurt him. And i think he would be best served as a last resort(aka tomorrows starter).
People keep talking about game 3, but like I said, PM was all about playing each game like it was the last. I dont see why he should change that. Lets worry about game 3 if it happens.

Ross is a good choice for tonight. PM has the coaching upper hand right now and that is great. Ross will be fine. GEAUX TIGERS!

My guess is that Ross goes 5 innings and gives up 4 runs. LSU wins 9-6 to clinch CWS.

i wouldn't say that. Texas has arms for days.
if they get any kind of prolonged outing by Jungman tonight, and somehow win, tomorrow will be a crap shoot.
And Jungman is fully capable.
then they'd have Cole Green tomorrow night and prob Workman too if needed.

I think we all know Ross is gonna have a short leash...with Bradshaw, Cain, Bert, Byrd and Jones all available. This will most likely be a group effort by the bullpen to keep LSU in the game. Can Ross have a great outing and get us into the late innings? Maybe...but not likely given his lack of recent starts and also recent lack of success
The good thing we have going for us is that UT still isnt that great of a hitting team...and i dont think they can beat LSU with small ball.

hopefully not. We need at least 6 from Ross.

Im more comfortable with Bradshaw out there to be honest...and UT seems to love the fastball and looked pretty perplexed with Bert. Jones against the lefties is still not going to worry me much. I really hope we dont have to see much of Byrd or Cain..although I think Byrd could be effective against their lineup for an inning or two.
But yes, Ross going 6 innings in that heat with what he's done recently would be a HUGE effort....Im all for that...

If Ross can go 7 innings, that will be MONEY! Lets hope the UT bats are cold and hit straight to defenders to keep the pitch count low! I am sure Ross is pumped and ready to go. I also hope they are pumping boys with IVs right now and making them hydrate like crazy!

All the pitchers looked to get gassed last night. An extra day of rest will help Ranaudo.
I figure that LSU bats will get into one of the UT pitchers eventually. hopefully its tonight.

Bradshaw and Chad to an extent are the only guys i really trust outside of Ott.
if we have to go to Cain, or Bert, i get worried. Byrd too.

He does? Read Mainieri's quote listed above. It's very reasonable to expect him to be less than 100% being on just 3 days rest.
I your opinion of Ranaudo's readiness is why you and I are coming to different conclusions.

so have they officially announced Jungman as the starter. Correct me if i am wrong, but i dont think he has started a game since June 8th.
He is gonna be nervous as shite. I think we will have a good opportunity to jump on him early. Not every freshman in America has ice in there veins like Ott. Lets rattle him early.

i dunno man, our bullpen has been dealing lately. i wouldnt mind getting about 5 innings out of our pen. hopefully our offense will take care of business, but i dont think 5 innings is too much to ask considering how well theyve done lately. and i don't see texas hitting 600 home runs again today, but we'll see.

its gonna be hot regardless, man.
Ruffin and Coleman threw well rested and got tired.
a 20 year old on 3 days after throwing 70 pitches shouldn't be any more fatigued that if he got an extra day.
him saying he is going to put him in to close a game pretty much tells me that. Blow that lead and we are really fricked. I dont see why we just dont start him to begin with
