Who would you like to see up in the bottom of the ninth with runners on 2nd and 3rd with two outs and 1 run down. That's the question! There is a left hander pitching. Remember Mitchell strikes out north of 30%. Would you rather see Dean, Schimpf, Gibbs, LeMahieu, Mahtook, Ochinko, Helenihi or even Hanover over Mitchell?? Bet you would!!

As far as his defensive skills, his fielding percentage is below average for an outfielder, he has an average arm and gets a bad jump on the ball. His speed just doesn't make up for the shortcomings. I'll take Landry, Mahtook and Helenihi defensively over Mitchell anyday.

First round, I can't see it.

That is why you are not a scout. JM has played baseball half the time of the other players.I think that with time he will make it to the majors. He will learn at the next level. Besides tools is what the scouts look at and project from there. Good luck JMith. I know you can and will make it.Keep working hard and keep your head up and don't listen to all the negitive talk from all the ranters that never played the game their selvs. Hard work has gotten you where your are now keep it up.

Angels showing some love...

First-round buzz:
The Angels could use their two first-round selections for a pitcher and a position player, most likely an outfielder or a third baseman with power. They could go local, with Santa Monica High School's Tyler Skaggs, a 6-foot-5 left-handed pitcher, among those high on everybody's list. Mike Trout (Millville H.S., N.J.), Everett Williams (McCallum H.S., Austin, Tex.)and LSU's Jared Mitchell fit the club's desired profile in the outfield. Jiovanni Mier, a shortstop who also pitches at Bonita H.S. in LaVerne, Calif., could be a fit. Matt Davidson, a power-hitting third baseman at Yucaipa (Calif.) H.S., might be an intriguing choice.

Too many holes in his entire game to overcome.

Me either. Never saw a first round draft choice bat so close to the bottom of the order regardless of who is pitching. Just don't see him in the first couple of rounds.

I googled this.......
AAA baseball players salaries are based depending on how long you have been playing. There are basically three levels.
1) Veteran player who has big league time and has a split contract between the minors and the major league organization. These guys make good money...but not $3000,000. Probably $75,000 or so.
2) Seven year free agent which means they make been in the minor leagues for seven years with no big league time but are able to negotiate a contract because they have been around for seven years. These guys make a decent living as well, probably somewhere around $3,500-$4,500 per month.
3) Prospect working their way through the system trying to get to the major leagues. Ususally make $2,00-$3,000 per month.
The money usually is not made in the minors. Signing bonuses are normally the most money a person would see before they make the major leagues.

... So he can get back to the bench really fast after striking out (61 SO) or getting picked off base.

I like him. Glad he's on our team, but don't see first round stuff.

But he definitely has the tools, and with year-round instruction and practice- he will bring his batting up to par with his defense and athleticism.

I agree as well.

if he proves otherwise at the next level, i'll admit that I was wrong.

just questioning why he is projected as a first round pick
I spoke with a MLB scout at the SEC tourney and his comments about Mitchell were mostly that JMitch has the most upside of any college player he's seen. If his weaknesses can be corrected, Mitchell will play in the majors one day. The scout was in awe when talking about his speed.

Russ Johnson...Todd Walker...Eddie Furniss...Aaron Hill...Jason Williams...Brad Hawpe...Blake Dean...Ryan Theriot...Mike Fontenot...Blair Barbier

Please describe how you felt when they were batting vs. how you feel when Jared Mitchell is batting. I'm sorry, but I don't see it. I can't believe everyone is putting so much stock into speed.

I don't see it either.......he sorta reminds me of Willie Mayes Hayes.....someone with his speed should hit alot of ground balls, and should be a good bunter. But he can't bunt worth a crap, and either strikes out or hits a pop fly a majority of the time....though he does have a lot of potential, I'm not sure how he can be projected as a first round pick.

When the above players were at LSU, I thought all of them would be major leaguers one day with the exception of Barbier.

Can't blame you, but I'm just repeating what I was told by a scout. Those guys make a living at it so I have to defer to their judgment.

Even with all of his strikeouts, JMitch still leads the team (for regular players) in OBP and walks. Can they teach him to hit a down and away curve ball or fast ball? I guess they think they can.

Everyone seems impressed that he walks so much, thus has the leading OBP. My question is this. What happens when he faces talented pitchers who throw strikes??

The OBP thing is so overrated in College. He sees one good pitcher a week.

I don't know how much credence MLB scouts put on walks. That comment was mine, not the scout I spoke with.

With you baseball insight, maybe you should consider becoming a scout.

If you are under the impression I'm arguing with you, I'm not. I realize scouts know more than me, but I also realize they are looking for an un-polished gem. After watching him for 2 years, I don't see it.

His baseball instincts leave me puzzeled. Tries to steal bases in bad situations. Mental lapses in the field. No adjustments at the plate during a game. He bunts like Shaq shoots free throws.
