This is the kind of stuff that pisses me off so much. I can't listen to him anymore. He'll say "HUGE whole up the middle" and then we find out it was 4 yard gain.

And anytime a receiver catches a ball, he's "WIDE" open according to Jim.

Yeah this is worst and it happens on every drive.

True, but would you have described the TE as "Wide Open" and not even mentioned Reid was challenging the play? Think about if you're just listening, and have no visual on the play. Jim tells you a guy is wide open, and makes a catch at the one. Then 3 seconds later, he tells you Eric Reid actually intercepted the ball. No matter how you slice it, that's a horrendous way to describe the play.

Not to defend a Hawthorn call...b/c you really can't!
It's actually PAINFUL to try and listen to the man call a game.

That being said, The TE was "WIDE OPEN"!
When Reid spotted him and left his man he was probably a good 4 to 5 yards behind the TE.

Thank God for under thrown balls and that Eric Reid is a stud...HELL of a heads up athletic play.

LINK

SIDE NOTE:
Did anyone else notice on CBS the great big "OH NO" let out by Verne Lundquist when he realized Reid had intercepted.
Wonder who he was pulling for?

Hawthorne screwing up big calls is not what makes him hard to listen to - it's the consistent small screw ups like getting names wrong or when he totally goes blank and can't spit out the play by play until the action is over. You just hear the crowd and he says something like "oh my" or "it looks like..." before finally getting it together to explain what happened.

Most of his calls are exactly like this. They completely lack context and situational awareness.

I can't fault Hawthorne for his call of the Ford overtime run. I was sitting the south endzone of Bryant-Denny, where overtime was played, and even I thought Ford had scored. Hell, every LSU fan in my section thought the same. We were screaming, high-fiving, and dogpiling before we noticed that the officials had ruled him out at the seven. I think Ford himself thought he had scored.

Levin is an Arm Chair QB. Drag his arse up to the booth and put a microphone in front of him and see how he does - live - on the air.

John Furgeson (RIP) was the best ever. I can't stand to listen to Hawthorn when LSU is doing poorly. The man is so damn negative.

I think the funniest part of this is that the guy being critical of Hawthorn's radio work sounds like the late effeminate comedian Paul Lynde.

sure .. the jack hunt shite goes down in infamy .. but the alabama calls are both reaches .. anyone sitting in a press box would have initially thought the ball was caught by alabama .. and yes .. he was wide open until reid made a great improvisation and recovery ... then, i would think most people thought ford scored a TD on that play ...

the one that hawthorne seems to have gotten away with was warren morris's famous HR in the 1996 NCG .. jim clearly calls it a three-run homer when it is a two-run homer .. surprised LSU never got him to dub that one over like the bluegrass miracle ..

he originally said jack hunt caught the TD pass .. when, obviously, jack hunt is white and was a safety and wouldn't have even been on the field for that play .. he was later allowed by LSU to dub henderson's name over that ..

We all heard the "Oh, No!" from Verne. Just one of the things that makes him a pole smoker.

Did anyone hear Jim Sat vs WKU right before the half.

"Jefferson scrambles out of the pocket, had a man wide open, and now just throws it away..... AND IT IS CAUGHT!"

I was like dude, WTF!?@? Who pays this guy?
