I remember driving home from a church function with my dad, listening to the 1972 Ole Miss game on the radio of our 1966 Pontiac Ventura. It got so exciting going down the stretch that he had to pull over in front of the Krispy Kreme on Plank Road to make sure we didn't run off the road or into anyone else. When Jones completed that pass we screamed and hollered like maniacs. John Ferguson was the best.
Now, that is an awesome memory. Brings back a lot of nostalgia.

He was a lovebable guy and LSU to the core. His gaffs were hilarious. He wasn't accurate by any means and he made a lot of mistakes and tried to correct them on the spot which made it even funnier. Typical call would be something like,

"Lyons is back to pass, it's complete at the 30 to the 20, to the 10, TOUCHDOWN!!! Kentucky leads 6 nothing" He never said it was intercepted.

Another example was:

"Lyons gives it to Alexander, he's to 20 the 30 the 40 aaaannnd they're going to spot it at the 27."

You would just bang your head on the radio it was so funny.

I loved JF. Another of my favorites: "...and the ball is intercepted by (pause) NOBODY!"

I think Hawthorne's negativity is a recent thing (last 10 years). I like him, but if I had to pick Ferguson was better.

i don't know if JF was any better, really. their styles differ so much. back in JF's day, it was still largely improper to be a homer or to show too much disappointment, either. now it's a different protocol and JH fits that bill nicely. I actually like JH a lot--especially baseball.
but play by play i think hawthorn is better than ferguson and he has a lot more character to his voice, too. but i grew up w/ JF and he'll always have a special place in my heart.

Yea, you would just sit there and think "well I guess it was intercepted" damn. You would always be too pissed off that the ball went the other way to be pissed and JF.

The quality of John Ferguson's voice seems to be missing from these. I seem to remember him having more of a nasal tone than that in the audios in the links. or perhaps it was the radios and reception in Mobile at the time.

What's interesting to me is that I only missed one of these plays (Morris home run) as they actually happened. The ones before Hawthorne were heard on the radio as my dad and I listened in the car in our driveway in Mobile. Whether or not Hawthorne, Ferguson, or Pollitz were good or not has little to do in comparison to the memories. Spending time with my Dad, the people I was with when the event occurred, and the ecstacy of the win were definitely benchmarks in my memory. It's been good to be an LSU fan.

Great memories. I was at the game so I have never heard the call on the radio.

Some of you guys are simply miss informed. He was the best and is and shall always be "The Golden Voice" of Fighting Tiger Football. From the first game Hawthorne did in 83 he has been a joke!

I do agree that Ferguson was the Golden Voice of LSU, but for you to call Hawthorne a "joke" is pretty ignorant in my opinion.
The man has called 3 major LSU sports for a quarter of a century. That's approximately 275 FB games, 1100 baseball games, and 750 basketball games. He must be doing something right.

But he's a 'joke.'

Right.

Who would you rather have had? Joe Dean Sr?
Joe Dean Jr?, Marv Albert? Don Cricqui?

JF was great and I grew up listening to him. I brought a radio to a game once about 1968 and was listening JF tell some story while the game was going on, when he finished the story he was about 5 plays behind, he invented 2 plays to catch you up to the ball position.

Favorite quote "beautiful clip downfield".

JF is LSU football history. How could anyone dislike his voice. It was deep and booming, as I grew up listening to it. One of my sons heard JH and gave me an odd look and asked.......what happened to LSU football? He said that he sounded like a cheer leader with that shrill voice. Then, I found out he was a cheerleader at Northwestern. That explains it.

Reason being he has been doing football since 1983 and still does not know the officials signals for penalties, cannot tell yardage gained or needed, is totally ignorant of the game of football. That is why is a "joke" at calling a football game!!
