Note "effectively." This is essentially official scorer's discretion.

SECTION 26. If a relief pitcher meets ALL of the following conditions, the official scorer should credit that pitcher with a save:
a. He is the finishing pitcher in a game won by his team;
b. He is not credited with the win; and
c. He meets one of the following conditions:
(1) He enters the game with a lead of not more than three runs and pitches at least one inning;
(2) He enters the game with the potential tying run on base, at bat or on deck; or
(3) He pitches effectively for at least three innings.

Most pitchers throwing badly wouldn't last 3 innings anyways. We've probably never seen somebody go the last 3 and not get a save. It's a loophole.

so you could be up 5 runs, get one out, and get a save

"Effectively" can also be defined in a thousand different ways. For a freshman in a 12-0 game, it means don't give up 12 runs. Depends on how much of a stickler your home scorer is.

I don't normally say anything about grammar but that's pretty bad.

Gizmo, another weird twist of the rules concerns a relief pitcher getting a win in what most people would not really consider even a save situation. I have a friend whose son pitches for MSU. Last week the MSU starter went 4 innings and gave up 3 hits and one earned run with 8 K's. At the time he left, MSU was up 6-1. My friends son came in as relief and pitched well, 3 innings of 1 hit ball with 5 K's. Because of the 5 inning starter rule, the reliever got credit for the win. I was happy for the kid, but that rule is kind of messed up, especially early in the season when starters may be on pitch counts etc.

Mississippi State? Was the game 9 innings? Or was this one of their 7 inning games?

Or pitch 3 or more innings to finish said game FWIW.

Nevermind. I don't think they've played any 7 inning games. You're talking about Forrest Moore. He pitched the 5th, 6th, and 7th innings of a 9 inning game a while back.
Why would this be a weird twist of the rules? The starter has to go 5 to get a win. The starter only went 4, so the next guy to go an inning if the team holds the lead is going to get the win.
And LSU spanked the pants off of Forrest last season!
I hope he's better this year, I went to high school with him.
ETA: I meant 7 innings, not 9 in my first sentence. That was a bad typo.

Okay, the starter goes 3 innings and the score is 5 to 0 after 3 innings. Reliever comes in and pitches 3 innings of shut-out ball, still 5-0. Another reliever comes in and pitches 3 innings of shut-out ball. Starter did'nt go 5 innings, so the second pitcher gets the win and the last pitcher the save?
