So the deal is, Jacksonville State's band comes to Tiger Stadium and if they are good, we hire their band director?
Kind of like an on field interview

By the way, the word from Jacksonville is that we have had 481 report for band camp. If that number holds, we will be the largest marching band in the country.

Cool. That kinda sucks for your fans though, since seats for your band will come out of your visiting ticket allotment.

Why are people acting like they care about hearing some dime a dozen white college marching band? I think people are confusing Jacksonville State.. JSU with Jackson State.. JSU. People think an HBCU is coming to Tiger Stadium. Which would be exciting.

I believe the LSU band had 325 last year, so probably somewhere in that vicinity.

i think there’s a lot of truth to this

Because of the similarity in the name, people do often confuse the two schools. We’re also sometimes confused with Jacksonville University in Florida. As far as the marching bands though, there are of course huge differences. The Jackson State baand marches like other HBCU’s. They are definitely entertaining but very different than Jax State. The Jax State band is also very entertaining but in a different way. They tend to blow you away with their massive size, intricate formations, and superior musicianship. You can refer to the earlier link that I posted of their performance. Both styles are entertaining and there is room for all different types of bands.

By the way, I am a huge college football fan in general and FCS football in particular. I can’t believe I’m posting so much about marching bands. I am no band nerd and can’t play anything. Even to my untrained ear though, it is easy to recognize excellence and we are proud of our band, as I am sure the LSU fans are as well. With 481members out of a enrollment of 8700, it is a pretty big deal on our campus. We also have a pretty good football team as well. About as good as you can get with a 63 scholarship limit.

I would hope the majority of this board remembers where Ryan Perrilloux transferred to and knows it wasn't a HBCU.

They invite just about anyone who wants to be a member to their camp, then make cuts to get to 325.

I think a lot of people think this is Jackson State when in reality it's Jacksonville State, the team that nearly beat Auburn last season

It's always 325. We have a week of camp and a cut night at the end of camp. Only 12 piccolos (edit: or maybe only an elite 8 piccolos, I forget, it's been a few years...) make it compared to 50+ trumpets or 28-30 mellophones, for instance. Also, no pit. And a smaller colorguard. Always only one drum major.

How many trumpets, trombones, and sousaphones does JSU have? That's the real comparison number. A bunch of clarinets doesn't really do much...

I don’t know the answer about numbers right off hand. I do know that we don’t use sousaphones. Instead, they use Conn 20-J recording tubas. They get a deeper and richer sound out of them and it’s one of the things the band is kind of known for.
