Because LSU is not filled with a bunch of inbred morons like Alabama and Ole Miss, who claim phantom titles. Sort of like the Chicago Bears and Packers who claim championships from the 20s-40s, back when the NFL had like 5 teams and there was no AFL.

Actually, if Alabama claimed all the titles awarded them, they would have 17. They have been awarded titles by services in 1925, 1926, 1930, 1934, 1941, 1945, 1961, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1973, 1975, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1992, & 2009. Four of our titles came prepoll; we flat out shouldn't claim 1941, the rest were awarded by the AP, Coaches, or BCS.

1966,

In Bama's defense, they were robbed of a championship that year. You can't tell me that the northern sportswriters were not prejudice against a southern team...
And for the record, the LSU team of 1908 may be one of, if not the most impressive of all time...

How many we claim doesn't really get me bent out of shape. That being said, I'd like to claim 1908 (or have someone explain to me why we don't).

The national championship foundation awarded it posthumously (the way most titles were awarded) and college football database recognizes it- all you have to do is print it up in the program

If you only count modern era AP/UPI/BCS titles, no one has more than Alabama. Alabama also has 9 untied, undefeated, bowl champion seasons. The next closest is PSU with 5. Let the trophies fall where they may.

Why does LSU not claim all of these like Alabama and Ole Miss?

I don't know about Ole Miss or LSU, but Alabama has a Rose Bowl trophy for all of our ancient claims (1925, 1926, 1930, 1934.) Holding a trophy from the 'granddaddy' adds the slightest bit of legitimacy imo.

There was no higher prize nor loftier achievement to be had in those days.

I might just be reading that wrong, but doesn't LSU only have 4 western titles in football?

No, we have 7 western division titles but only 4 trips to ATL. The others we did not own the tiebreaker but the conference still shows all teams tied as co-champs... That is how Ole Miss claims a 2003 western division championship when we won the SEC and BCS championship.

I noticed that during the national championship game this year the anouncers made it known that Alabama does not have as many championships as they claimed.

Actually they were just showing our 8, now 9, AP titles.

actually, 6 now 7 ap titles. alabama won ap titles in 61, 64, 65, 78, 79, 92, & 2009. the 1973 title was awarded by the coaches poll, the 1941 by houlgate. all other claimed titles (25,26,30, & 34) were awarder before the poll era.

Regardless, these titles aren't made up as some would like to suggest. Throwing out the 1941 title, every championship is AP, Coaches, or UPI (all standards since 1950). The Rose Bowl titles of '25, '26, '30, and '34 were won in a era when the Rose Bowl was the only bowl game (followed in the 30s by the Orange).

Did they wear the winged leather michigan style helmets in 1908 or did they not even wear helmets then?
And are there prints of that old picture available anywhere?
