Some good points. I hate "next year we'll be great" threads when the current season is still going, but we did start more freshman than ever before.

Your overall point is true but you exaggerated it a bit. All new defensive backfield? You mean Reid didn't start the previous year? All new receivers? They might not have started but Beckham got lots of playing time and the others got in just about every game. Offensive line was decimated but the ones we ended up with played better than the ones we started with. Likewise new LB's were better than the old ones. And now you want us to be optomistic because we have so many players coming back. Those same players that were somehow a liability this year? And if we lost so many unforseen players this year, cannot the same thing happen next? Just keeping the facts straight.

Ahh... and there it is. So good to see the Rant still delivers.

I agree. That was pretty impressive how he was able to read so much negativity into a very bright outlook. Lots of earnest cynicism, too.

I was saying that all season when people were getting pissed off that we weren't blowing out all the cupcakes and winning SEC games by two scores.

LSU still went 10-2 and were a first down away from winning the SEC West

This is the primary reason people are in such a foul mood. We had it, just didn't finish the game. Trust, it still stings me. I have a visceral recollection of being in the stands that night.

Hell, forget the sheer number of players lost, think of the quality. LSU lost its three best players for the season in August and September: Honey Badger, Faulk, and Blue.

How would Bama's season had gone had they lost, say, Milliner, Lacy, and Barrett Jones for the season? Even without the other losses, had they lost those three and lost to us, we'd never hear the end of how it didn't count because they were short their best players.

This season was amazing given the personnel losses. It's Miles best in season job since 2005, the Katrina year.

Someone who gets it. Dnt tell the tards on here. Lsu should never lose a game. Doesnt matter we lost 23 scholarship players. forget that the most important player on offense got hurt and the most important player on d was kicked off the team.

These would have been good posts in September to set realistic expectations for the team.
Thy are not especially insightful in helping to explain why the game was blown against Bama, why our offensive gameplan was so conservative against Florida, etc.
Bottom line is that the team put itself in a position to have a championship season but fell short. Its not some huge surprise or disappointment, but stuff happens every year and you play the hand you deal/are dealt.

Might have gone 13-0. You obviously never know. No one should have expected us to have as good a year record-wise as, say, 2006 and 2007, but we did.

Young, inexperienced players, however talented, often do not finish big games well. It happens all the time. They don't know how to close the way that more experienced players do. Without the losses that we had, we might have closed better.

That might explain the Red Zone struggles as well.

You missed the point of course. OP was saying that we did good in spite of things being bad. I was saying that actually things weren't so bad this year. So which of us is negative? Everything I said is absolutely true. The second build of the offensive line did play better than the first. Reid was a starter in the defensive backfield last year. These are negative things?

The only thing I was disputing was that we had to be better next year because we had returning players. But yet he had said we were good this year in spite of playing new players. I didn't consider the new players to be a negative, he did.

Just because you didn't start last year doesn't mean you can't improve and start the next year. Or a freshman will prove to be so good that you can't keep him off the field. Did anyone really believe that Hill would beat out the four good veteran backs ahead of him? Oh well, don't let the facts get in the way.

Threads like this are depressing, because they are attempts to rationalize failure. For the second year in a row we let Bama grab the prize.

The fact that we were in a position to play for the prize this year shows how much talent we have. The Bama loss wasn't because of a lack of talent.

Based on pure talent alone, we should be dominating next year. I wish that I could be more confident that the coaches won't let another prize slip away, but coaching is the one area of the team that won't have more talent next year.

Try again. God this post is full of so much fail.

And to whoever said there is no reason to fire the equipment manager... YOU ARE A JOKE! Have you seen how awful our stickers are stuck on week after week? Miles couldn't hire a decent equipment manager if spent a year researching. All he knows is run up the middle and speed option. Saban would never allow such shoddy sticker placement on a bamalandteam helmet. It's so bad even Mr. Cool himself, Uncle Verne, can't bring it up because he can barely get through a sentence without choking in laughter.

I am not trying to say "wait till next year," but the team should be MUCH better next year without doubt. They will be more experienced to be sure.

Good original post. Among NFL early departures, suspensions and injuries, the attrition this season was insane. I disagree with the above quote. We could be better next season. However, if we lose Logan, Minter, Reid, Montgomery, Mingo and Simon, we could very well end up in a similar situation: a good but not great team.
