Craig Steltz. Played about 10 snaps on special teams the last 2 games of his Freshman year in 2004.
Think we could have used his leadership and play in the secondary in 2008?
Absolutely! Thought we were just including current Tigers.

Nevis........no way. We won a BCS Championship because of him. Remember, Alexander and Dorsey were hurt. I bet he gladly traded a red shirt year for the BCS Ring and his contribution. Besides....we would never have seen him on the field next year if he had red shirted in 2007...unless we happened to drop in on a Sunday Game.
We played him for half of one game and then limped out a gimpy Dorsey for the rest of the season.
And DT is the one position where people don't leave early as much. Sure he might go but it'd be unreal to have him another year.

I'll probably get shite for this but if Les and his staff can't close the deal on Mettenberger then they should approach Russel Sheppard about redshirting in 2011 and do nothing but learn the QB position again.
He would likely be a Hiesman candidate in 2012/13 ala Denard Robinson, only LSU will have an awesome defense so we will win the BCSNC each year.
Think about it. He would be Jefferson/Lee on steroids!! We will also have 'sick' talent around him at every skilled position (Randle, Boone, Wright, Williams, Landry, Blue, Ware, Hilliard, Hill, Worle, not to mention any new signees) Seriously, do you really think he can't make the throws our current QB's can make?
You might laugh, but just search youtube for his high school highlite videos. Just unbelievably 'SICK'.

If Shep would have redshirted then had an off season or early season injury could he still get a medical redshirt?
Not completely sure what you are asking, but once he takes a voluntary RS, he couldn't get a medical redshirt
Posted on 10/14/10 at 9:58 am to Bonjourno
That's not entirely true
It is possible get a medical redshirt(6th year) after taking a voluntary redshirt...it's just rare for the NCAA to grant it

DeAngelo Peterson. He could be a RS SO right now.
Ryan Baker
Brandon Taylor
These guys are all juniors who could have been here another year. I'll understand the argument for Baker his freshman year, cause he was from Florida and not playing his freshman year could have gotten him a little down a little home sick. Plus he was a deamon on special teams

This is a waiver of the five year rule. A lot of people call it a med redshirt especially when it is given when they miss their Sr year. Its not really a med RS though. Its generally used for guys who are injured for 2+ years also

Is there any limits on the number of redshirts a team can have? Is it automatic if a player does not play?
Posted on 10/14/10 at 10:24 am to Bonjourno
I believe Les addressed this Wed. night. If a player plays in 3 or less games gets hurt and misses rest of season he is eligible for a Medical Reshirt. This is what I think was said on the show.

No

Pretty much. As long as the player doesn't play during the season.

I definitely didn't think Russel Shepard should have been redshirted at the beginning of last year, but looking back at the way he was used, he definitely should have been given a redshirt.

Yea, but this is provided they don't already have a RS

I'm trying to understand if it makes sense not to redshirt a kid his freshmen year because it gives him a little insurance should he get hurt later in his career.
In short is there any advantage of not redshirting a freshmen that is not being counted on to contribute?

Russell Shepard. I swear, he was so skinny last year I thought he was going to get killed. He needed a year in the weight room.
Posted on 10/14/10 at 11:14 am to Rockerbraves
If he's not going to play, he will be redshirted. It all evens out in the end. For example, take Blackwell. He redshirted FR year then got hurt this year, his RS JR year. He cant get a med RS bc he already has a RS. So next year will be his RS SR year.
Say he didn't redshirt his FR year, then this would have been his SR year. He gets hurt and then would be granted a med RS. So next year would still be his RS SR year just the same as the other scenario.
So in short it wouldn't benefit him to purposely not RS him

Two that aren't as noticeable, but Kadron Boone and James Wright both needed one
I know you sorta explained yourself, but that would leave us with 4 scholarship WRs. That's not good... particularly since we run 5 WR sets.

He actually played in 4 games (Miss. State, Florida, Arky and bowl game), not 2, in his true frosh season.
