1997 they once again got an Independence Bowl invitation and decided to accept because it was probably the best they were going to get. It ended up being a rematch against LSU, who ND beat in the regular season, and LSU beat their asses in white helmets and gold jerseys.
one of my favorite LSU games I've ever watched.

The Iron Bowl is always a slugfest bloodletting with Auburn more often than not playing otherworldly . You cant just look at Auburn’s record going in and say “ relax , we got this boys ! “

We were ranked 8th in the AP after the last regular season game. In the Final AP, Penn State was #2 and undefeated and USC was #3 unbeaten and tied once. There is no way we would have jumped these teams to number 1.
Good luck with this. People here--- many who weren't even born in 1969 will die on the hill that had LSU played in that 1970 Cotton and won they would have been AP champs. I'm sure "some" Cotton Bowl scout did offer LSU. But Darrell Royal tried to get Penn State ,who refused. The Peach Bowl held its bid for over a week hoping LSU would go again.
The 1969 LSU team was fantastic. But the loss to Ole Miss evaporated any chance at an NC even with a Cotton Bowl win. Remember the following season, one loss Notre Dame -- who had been ranked #1 during some of 1970, did beat unbeaten then #1 Texas in the 1971 Cotton Bowl., 24-11 ....and finished 3rd in the final AP poll.

I’m not a ND fan either, but Texas, Vandy or ND should have the 11 & 12 spots. It’s a complete joke that JM & Tulane are in. Common sense was not used in the way they picked the 12 teams.

I don’t understand why people keep saying this. The committee didn’t pick JMU or Tulane over Notre Dame. They picked JMU and Tulane over 8-5 Duke.
I for one am glad that they have the auto bids for conference champions because it at least adds some objectivity to the process.
Tulane and JMU fully earned their way in by what they did on the field….that’s what all the pro-playoff people were crying about.
The controversy with Notre Dame is because of the subjective decisions of the committee, and their arbitrary uses of criteria when it comes to comparing teams. A few years ago, UGA dropped from #1 to #5 after a 3-point sec Championship game loss to Alabama. The bulldogs were also two-time defending national champions (fwiw).
This year, Alabama gets blown out by three scores in the SEC-C, and doesn’t fall at all. And yes, while you could agree (except for BYU) that a loss in an extra game you earned shouldn’t keep you out of the playoffs…..how you played/lost should certainly factor in.

I agree....and I fully believe the BCS rankings proved to be the best. No "feelings" or DEI involved.

You sure about that? We saw a 2 loss LSU in a BCS championship game.
We'll see.
The 2 loss LSU team in the BCS Championship game doesn't persuade me away from my opinion that I doubt we'll ever see a 3 loss LSU team in the playoffs. We'll see. But you are right to raise that as a good example.

There are 60 or so Power 4 teams. Notre Dame consistently ranks in SOS in the bottom 15, some years bottom 5. Every CFP team outside the SEC has a bottom 20 SOS in regular season P4. Ohio State, Indiana, Miami, Notre Dame. Only further providing proof that it’s not about how good a team is or not, it’s how cupcake you schedule. SEC doesn’t get that luxury.

You know if two teams were even by the so called committee ...head to head games weigh into the equation...They lost to Miami and I don't care if it is Week 0 or Week 10..you lost...Get over it....you beat Miami your in...Join a conference...

ND does have a right to complain about Bama getting skullfricked and not dropping, but not nearly as much right to complain as BYU.
The bottleneck teams should've been ranked: UM, BYU, ND, Bama
Still, frick ND. Join a conference you crybabies.
