He could still be a good QB if he had half of the arm strength of his All pro NFL QB of a brother.
I read somewhere he was better in HS than Phillip FWIW. I think the kid has alot of potential

People tend to think that every QB should be ready to go a year into the system. That's just idiotic.
Not to mention, I think it was always known Rivers was a couple year project. From what limited video is out so far (and it is very limited) he looks to be throwing the ball well.

But look at Matthew Stafford or Aaron Murray...started as freshmen. Didn't try to do more than what they were asked, and did fine.
Stafford was garbage as a freshman.

Exceptions, not the rule.

Not necessarily...
It could be the rule, with the variable of a good QB coach.
Take the variable out, and it becomes the exception.

yeah I think somebody needs to read up on Stafford a bit more. I wouldn't quite call him garbage, but he did try to do too much early before settling down and playing within himself. had a few games where he was pretty INT prone.

Miles is NEVER going to let another season come down to a freshman under center - even if it's a redshirt freshman. Our program should have enough depth to be able to run a Junior out there, even as a #2.
+1 to this. I think the reason that a redshirt freshman like jlee was thrown in so early was due in part to saban leaving us like he did. We are just now recovering from that hole in the class. I really hope we never are in that situation again

The last time yall tossed in a freshmen to start he ended up with a ridiculous amount of pick 6s. I'm sure LM would love to keep Randall and Rivers away from live action (except for blowouts) for another year or so.

Quit acting like you know what Les is going to do...NOBODY knows what Les is going to do. Conventional wisdom does not apply here.

None of us really know anything about Rivers and what he may contribute in the future. And he was not a blue chip ultra-talented recruit that people anxiously count down the seconds til his playing days.
He's just an unknown to fans at this point.
That's not good nor bad...It is what it is. The coaches will know when he's ready, if ever.

uh, the reason why is because our starting QB was kicked off the team. Saban leaving didn't have much to do with any of that. 2008 was the 4th season after he left. That's an entire recruiting cycle. Miles also screwed up by not getting a single QB in the 2006 class. He signed he #7 class in the country but with no QBs. Everything looked fine because we had Jamrcus, Flynn, and Perrilloux on the roster, but when 2 of those are upper classmen, you're really putting yourself behind the 8 ball relying on a wild card like Perrilloux. The whole situation was just a mess, and if RP had never been booted, no one would ever even be talking about this right now.

Apparently the last couple days he has looked very sharp.

he lacks the arm strength and stength in general right now. mechanically things look funky, but the same is true for his brother. he needs time, but that is to be expected. we won't know enough about him before or after this season in most likelihood.

Might as well throw David Greene, 4-yr starter after taking a RS in 2000. UGA has had some very talented passing QBs, + Shockley, and at some point one has to say Richt is a good QB coach. If a guy has ability and composure then starting as a RSF, especially on a team with talent in all 3 aspects of the sport, isn't the worst thing ever.
If Rivers hadn't needed to add 30+ lbs when he arrived at LSU he might be further along. 6'7", 190 lbs, yeah he would have been awesome going against a front from Bama or UGA. I hope he pans out for the program.

Tommy Hodson didn't too too badly his frosh year.
It takes an extraordinary person to walk into a program and set the world on fire your first or second year but it can happen. I don't think people are looking for something like this out of Rivers or Randall, just someone who can step in and throw a pass or two if needed.
