In the long run...we will have to have a QB who offers the threat of downfield passing...otherwise our big opponents will simply load the box and shut down the run...so the natural instinct is to go with Lee...as the taker of most of the snaps...
Does Hatch have the potential to even offer that passing threat? It would seem like just a complete waste of the overall talent on offense if the opposing D can just line up and stuff the run....
1) Hatch was recruited to BYU. They've been known to throw the ball a little bit.
2) Hatch was recruited by Gary Crowton. He's been known the throw the ball a little bit.
3) Hatch is 6'3" 215.
Where did this perception come from that he cant' throw the ball more than 20 yards? Have you guys seen it 1st hand, or is it soley because he once attended Harvard.

If anything has been proven over the past five years, it is the fact that LSU does not need a guy that can throw it 70 yards to be successful. While it was awesome watching Jamarcus, a quarterback of his talent is not necessary to win football games and/or championships. This team, as those of recent years, will be rich in talent at all skill positions. In my opinion, the quarterback that can lead the team and not make mistakes will win the job.
It's not like Hatch or Lee can't throw the ball, they just don't throw it like Dan Marino. And, that's ok. Defenses will try to stack the box against us this year because of our running attack. It will be up to the coaches (specifically Crowton) to devise a game plan best suited to the QB that wins the job. Regardless, both have good enough arms to stretch the opposing defense out and make them respect that a play may go over the top.
Personally, I think Lee will win the job and prove to be a good QB.

apparently this guy thinks Hatch has to change the fans "perspective" to a pass first QB.
the only peoples who perspective really matter are Les's and Crowton's.
i doubt either guy makes an all SEC team this year, but both are capable QB's.

JR can slap the ball further with his penis, then Hatch can throw it - The Rant.

Again, maybe I missed something, but I don't remember LSU "airing it out" by any mean last season? Last time I checked, that didn't stop them from winning multiple championships. All they need is a good decision maker behind center that can get the ball to his playmakers. I wish one of the guys had more experience, but there isn't much you can do about that.

In all honesty, I think our QB situation will be very comparable to last years. We are going to put a guy out there that won't "lose" the game for us. Our team will be very hard to beat this year.

NC game stats:
12 passes under 10 yds. for 65 yds and 3 TD's.
7 passes between 10-25 yds. for 109 yds. and 1 TD.
NONE for over 25 yds....he averaged 5.4 yds. per completion.
Final stat 19/27 for 174 yds. and 4 TDs.
Lee or Hatch could make any of those throws. Ya'll just keep talking about the QB's, LSU will do fine.
A year ago, the LSU offense set 10 school records, including points in a season (541), points per game (38.6) and touchdowns scored (64), on its way to posting a 12-2 overall mark.
The 2007 LSU offense produced one of the top rushing and passing seasons in school history as Jacob Hester ran for 1,103 yards and 12 scores, while Flynn threw for 2,407 yards and 21 touchdowns. It marked only the sixth time in school history that LSU’s offense has featured a 1,000-yard rusher and a 2,000-yard passer in the same season.
Crowton served as the offensive coordinator for two years with the Chicago Bears. In his first year with the Bears in 1999, Crowton’s offense ranked No. 3 in the NFL in passing with an average of 258.5 yards per game. That year, the Bears established a franchise record with 4,136 passing yards behind a trio of quarterbacks.
And those 3 QB's?
Shane Matthews, Cade McNown and Jim Miller.
The Wiz has only used a small % of his playbook, this is a good year to keep an eye on the QB.

Yeah, but arm "strength" is so important.

Last year Flynn completed 56% of his passes for 21 TD's and 11 INT's. I would think both QB's with a second year under the Wiz could do as good or better. Returning 7 out of 8 leading receivers from last year, 4 of 5 rushers. This team will do just fine.

Not to mention the Meat and Potatoes of our O-line is back.

That may be, but his passing game was different than the 20 to 25 yard patern of Bradshaw .

I'm sure this has been brought up before, but if Hatch couldn't start at Harvard how is everyone so certain he will get the job done here?
Posted on 7/27/08 at 2:04 pm to tiger4178
It's sounding more and more like Hatch will start. If Hatch can complete passes on 3rd and 8, then I don't think Lee will see the field much.
Posted on 7/27/08 at 2:22 pm to Palm Beach Tiger
It's not that I think that Hatch has a weak arm, it is the fact that, with the ability to throw it deep to our fast WR's in mind, Lee has a stronger arm.
Also, people are saying that Hatch couldn't start at Harvard so he can't start here. Hatch was a freshman before he left for South America. Most true freshman don't start.
Finally, some people said that Hatch and Lee could make the throws that Flynn made in the BCSCG. You are probally right, but remember this: Flynn was good at reading defenses and making clutch 3rd and 4th down throws at critical times. Hopefully, these two QB's can so that also.

Both Lee and Hatch have more time in the Crowton system than Flynn did.
