For those of us that didn't follow College Ball very closely until recently, can someone please explain to me the significance of this play?
Great recap here:

I was in a bar on South Beach with some Tiger fans. It was the greatest by far

He was also a second baseman, not known for his power.
Kurt Gibson's HR , by contrast, was not in the final game of the series. This hit decided the championship.
Excellent.

I believe one of the most amazing things about that play was it was his first home run of the season.

If you ask an LSU fan where they were when Warren Morris hit his walk off, most of them can tell you. Warren Morris

If memory serves me right, the announcers were talking about how Morris missed quite a bit of the season due to an injury. And that it would take a miracle right now for LSU to come back.

That's how you know its a tremendous moment. When you can answer the "where were you when" question. History of sports. No. History of college sports. Yes. A truly great moment.
For the record, the answer is: sitting in my off campus apartment in Tigerland watching with my roommate.

It's that backyard hope filled ending. Bottom of the ninth, two outs, team trailing by one, runner on base. An unexpected hero steps to the plate, and drills a shot just inside the line, just over the fence. A first pitch, walk-off homerun to win the ultimate amatuer prize. It's the exact moment when hope fades for some, and anticipated defeat turns to bedlam and euphoria for others.
It's a real life Cinderella story. It's every man's most deeply held wish as a boy. But this one played out on a nationwide stage. And will stand as an eternal witness to that young man's, one shining moment in time.

IMO what made it so great was not only was it a game winning homer for the title but he had also been fighting injuries all year I believe it was his first one all season. Wasnt he down in the count also?
Posted on 1/15/09 at 9:11 pm to felixporelesoo
Absolutely.
It is THE play in all of college baseball so that in and of itself makes it among the greatest.
PS:if you're a Tiger fan how can you not smile at least a little when you think of that?

No. It was his first pitch, actually.

from an earlier link:

The walk-off home run won the game for the Tigers 9–8. It was his only home run of the season, and is the only walk-off championship-winning home run in College World Series history. In addition, it is the only 2-out, ninth inning, walk-off home run in a championship of any collegiate or professional level. The home run also won Morris an ESPY award for "Showstopper of the year."

Yes!
I have a baseball signed by Warren Morris.
Centerpiece of my sports memorabilia collection.
Definite goosebumps moment to watch the replay.
