The correct answer is 2003!!!! D was awesome but the O was very productive!!!!

I really think the best team (well in the last 20 yrs) was the 2006 team that beat ND in the Sugar.
I would have taken that team over any other LSU team. Schedule and conservative play calling at Aub cost us a shot at the NC.

Not ME!!! 1969 was the BEST LSU TEAM EVER IMO!!! They gave up like 354 yds rushing the WHOLE SEASON.

I will agree with this as well.

That 2006 Auburn team wasn't that bad. They beat up on Florida, which was something we didn't do. Had a pretty tough defense over the course of the year.

The best overall LSU teams all time:
1908
1935
1958
1969
1987
2003
2005
2006
2007
Next level
1936
1937
1959
1961
1982
1996
2001
The main what if teams:
1947 lost every starting rb before and during the season, even Y.A. got hurt in the second game.
1922 the whole team gets sick, LSU still plays the season out, Rutgers even offered to cancel the game.
1909 the lose of Clarence Smith and Martin Lally destoryed all hopes of a repeat of the 08 season. Also Doc Fenton missed a game due to grades.
1959 had Tommy Davis came back LSU would have likely been back to back NC.
2005 Playing the season without a break likely cost LSU a NC.
1935 Lost out on a Rose Bowl spot due to a 5 yard off sides call in the Rice game.
1969 Mac cost LSU the Ole Miss game.
Best overall team for its time:
2003
with a close second to 1958 and the 1908 teams.

Mac playing the 2 qb system never worked and because he used that system it cost LSU the game.
Mac played that 2 Qb because of the injuries he had on his early teams at LSU, having lost Nelson and others to injuries before and during the seasons before 1969.
Mac finally goes to the hot hand by the 1971 season and Bert Jones finally wins a starting spot in his jr year and the diffence between Bert and Lyons was night and day; just like the difference between Hillman and Lee.

1958 was undefeated....How can they not be the best?
I am partial to 2007 and truly think the 2006 team was even better.

What was there record in 1969????? And yes they lost to Ole Miss, BUT tell me a better D unit in LSU HISTORY!!! They gave up NOTHING on the ground when thats all teams did back then. THEY WOULD HAVE SHUT TEXAS DOWN BIG-TIME!!!!
Posted on 6/13/09 at 3:43 pm to dukke v
That is not the question dukke, Mac had the best team of his time at LSU and had the best defense in the nation.
But in the game that would have locked up a spot vs Texas, Mac keep rotating Lee in, when Hillman was having a great day vs Ole Miss.
1969 is one of the big what if years.
Yes I kinda of know little about LSU football history and watched all the LSU games on TV that year and 2 in person.
BTW you should have asked how the Cotton Bowl told LSU they had the bid to the Cotton Bowl locked up and how did we lose the bid?

This is a COTTON BOWL problem. And I will NEVER get why LSU fans are STILL mad at ND because of this!!!!
Posted on 6/13/09 at 4:07 pm to dukke v
Notre Dame was 7-1-1 when they took the bid on Nov 18 1969 to the Cotton Bowl, ending a 45 year ban on bowls.
One member of the Cotton Bowl committee (with TV backing) was behind the move to get ND.
The reason why LSU fans are still mad over this is because the Cotton Bowl board had already told LSU they had the bid.
Once ND ended the ban, the committee voted ND in over LSU and the rest is history.

Like I said. WHY take it out on ND?????????
Posted on 6/13/09 at 4:16 pm to dukke v
Because Notre Dame like the Big 10 did not believe in post season play at all.
The Big 10 rewarded it champ with a road trip to the Rose bowl, no other team was allowed to play a post season game.
Notre Dame for years on end said it was because of class work it would never go to a bowl game again.
That all changed because of the money TV gave them for the 1970 Cotton Bowl.
The debate on post season play had gone on for near 50 years, that is what you are missing. The Northern schools looked down on the southern school because of this and other issues.
