Who knows what his reasons were, but...
if all other things are equal, would you rather come to LSU where:
1.you have access to great recruits
2. Expectations are very high
3. They just fired their coach after 1 season.
4. You have to coach against Alabama, Florida, A&M, Auburn and the rest of the west every year.
5. If no playoff appearance in then next few years, you will probably be dismissed.
Or Notre Dame
1. Access to great recruits
2. Almost every game will be against lesser programs with less talent.
3. The media will constantly push you up the pre-season rankings and award you for victories against cupcakes.

This is stupid. Sure he’ll play against less talent at ND but he’ll also have less talent. If that means a coach is scared then our whole staff is scared, otherwise they’d coach in the pros.
