We were ranked 12th in the nation in scoring defense, all without the benefit of a pass rush. The job of a defense is to prevent scoring, something at which this defense excelled. Considering that the defense did this with some of the components looking poor (cough) (d line) (cough), I’m extremely confident in next year’s defense.

Without any improvement, our defense is one of the best in the nation. And I think Chavis will likely improve the unit. He’s not getting nearly enough credit. Bitching about the TOP from the 12th ranked scoring defense is just looking for something to bitch about.

You really think we don’t have enough ACTUAL problems on this team that we wouldn’t need to be inventing crap to worry about. Time of possession is not a stat which correlates to winning. Scoring is.

Lsu's Defense was good but you need a offense that compliments it. Time of possession plus field position usually are a big indicator on who will win the game. Lsu started most of their drives behind their own 40.

Our defense gave up 18 TDs in the regular season this year. The 2005 team gave up 19 TDs. You have to go back to about 1988 to find a team that gave up less TDs than those two teams. You compliment this defense with a better offense and this team wins 2 more games this year. If ya'll want to complain about a certain cordinator, your complaints should start and end with Crowton.

I think he is above avg/good but not great.

I'm not worried about him though b/c I really think we will see a whole new staff in 1 or 2 years.

So does every team.

Time of possession does not correlate to winning. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. It's important, but vastly overrated by most people. I'd rather have a great scoring D with problems with TOP than vice versa.

I'm confident Chavis will keep the defense respectable and will rarely if ever get blown out. I dont expect an intimidating, violent defense that blows up QBs or is even entertaining to watch.

He will always have an uninspired defense.

Can he recruit on a level with Bama and Florida? Those two schools have drawn some amazing defensive talent over the past couple years.

I have my doubts...sure we're 12 in scoring defense. Let's check out the scoring offenses we played:

9
10
15
25
39
46
51
52
69
72
93
113
115

Arkansas was the best o we played and they rung up 30 on us.

Fla was the next best and to our credit we held them to 13. And not making excuses but anyone who thinks UF didn't play it close to the vest that night due to Tebow's health wasn't watching the same game I was.

Next was Auburn...by far our best effort.

Bama...24 pts, not bad but they had their way with us the 2nd half.

Ole Miss...see Bama

Rest really not worth mentioning. Our defense wasn't horrible, but the #12 ranking is a bit misleading.

I look at it like this. It's the 4th Qtr and we're playing a really good team and need a stop..is this the defense that can do it?

So, Chavis faced EIGHT offenses ranked in the top half of the country, and you view this as a negative? That seems like a pretty fair schedule.

I just think we should focus on things that are actually broken. It's like we have a dying pateint, and people want to worry about clipping his toenails.

Actually if you factor in the offenses we played we are a bit better than our current ranking:

Scoring Defense rankings (adjusted for opposition) through games of 1/02/2010.
Rating represents expected score yielded against the average I-A (FBS) offense.

# Team rec Offense Defense
1. Alabama 13-0 35.16 [ 17] 7.11 [ 1]
2. Nebraska 10-4 27.65 [ 54] 8.18 [ 2]
3. Florida 13-1 37.53 [ 12] 9.28 [ 3]
4. Oklahoma 8-5 32.48 [ 26] 10.22 [ 4]
5. North Carolina 8-5 24.51 [ 76] 12.29 [ 5]
6. TCU 12-0 39.70 [ 4] 12.35 [ 6]
7. Ohio State 11-2 29.75 [ 38] 12.42 [ 7]
8. Virginia Tech 10-3 37.84 [ 11] 12.77 [ 8]
9. Penn State 11-2 27.83 [ 51] 13.81 [ 9]

11. Texas 13-0 42.89 [ 1] 14.07 [ 11]
12. South Carolina 7-6 23.99 [ 80] 15.04 [ 12]
13. Iowa 10-2 26.09 [ 64] 15.10 [ 13]
14. Mississippi 9-4 31.71 [ 28] 16.37 [ 14]
15. Air Force 8-5 27.08 [ 57] 16.98 [ 15]

no, like I said, it's not horrible by any means. Just pointing out stats can be somewhat misleading unless you look inside the stats. Just saying that the ranking makes it appear that we have a shutdown type of defense and we really don't.

I am

Chavis was real solid... put time of possession at teh feet of the offense more than defense

There could be improvement in areas but def has been solid if not amazing

When the offense has the ball for a whopping 1:30 every drive and then gives the other team the ball at the 40+ on nearly every drive, there's not much more the defense can do.

Ok if we jus had any kind of offense we win more games. I'll take a defense that gives up field goals because if our offense was run to it's capability we score touchdowns. Let the other team dink an dunk but our defense wasn't givin up 30 points a game an our offense should have been averaging 30 a game.

I am. Best defensive coaching I've ever seen.

For people who complain about the D-line, this is something I just don't understand. What's a first year DC have to do with a lack of talent among the D-line starters?

Chavis was dealt a crappy hand with the D-line, the LBs, and the constant 3-and-outs from the offense, and he did what he could to the best of his abilities. I'd say it was a masterful job.

I know it is a improvement from last year but Lsu gets killed on time of possession.
This has to do more with an anemic offense. As far as being comfortable with Chavis - yes. At least we know what we have, hopefully we have some defensive linemen man up which will help tremendously.

I'm definitely confident in Chavis, especially seeing the rapid development of our players. I truly believe we can have an elite defense next season at this rate considering the talent that will be arriving from the redshirts.

I have complete confidence in him. With the 110th Offense, it was his D that allowed us to win 9 games. With players learning his system, we will flourish on D. We need a new OC -- have been saying this since the beginning of the year.

I am very confident in Chavis.

I don't think he is the best defensive coordinator in the nation, but I think he is very good.

He took a team who had no understanding of zone concepts and made them a very good zone team. That's the hardest thing for a defense to do.

The linebackers were a HUGE improvement.

And, the defense excelled even though there was a pretty clear deficiency on the DL which everyone knows is typically a critical weakness.
