You voted for Trump and just now figured out that he likes tariffs?

If he does things that he didn’t campaign on, I reserve the right to gripe. But this is not one of those things.

If I remember right, you are an importer right?

I'm in the glass fabrication business. I import flat glass and associated hardware, primarily shower door hardware. 100% of my hardware is imported as no one makes it in North America. Most of the glass I consume is made stateside, but we import a little from China and Mexico to supplement supply deficits in domestic capacity.

The large majority of my industry/competition is controlled by a handful of multi-billion dollar corporations. There are very few small business fabricators in my industry in the US. I'm the only one in my market. I don't know if that makes me an idiot or a genius. I often think I'm the former. Fighting the big boys is hard, but I eek out a living.

In regards to tariffs, or at least the initial impact of tariffs, is the huge impact on cash flow for businesses. Like, you don't get to buy from China at net-30/60/90. No, you're paying that cash before it ships. If you're lucky and stuff doesn't get stuck somewhere in transit, it's 60-90 days before you start seeing cash come back in. That's all good and well when things are stable, but if I'm suddenly wiring 25% more cash somewhere, that's a cash hit for a while, and most SMB's don't have a lot of runway.

It was rough during parts of covid when shipping prices were jacked and boats were lined up at port. You'd pull up the marine traffic maps and just see your cash sitting off the coast, hoping it comes in so you can make payroll next month.

Trump posted that he will be putting a tariff on illegal drugs smuggled into the country. Why hadn’t any other president thought of that?

Illegal and controlled substance taxes have been applicable for years:

Wasn’t there a marijuana tax stamp in the 80s, so prosecutors could get you for possession of an illegal substance plus tax evasion?

I think I saw one of these when I was younger

Yep, that's where I remember them from. I recall you could get the Minnesota application for a tax stamp out of High Times magazine for a while. The trick was that you had to show up at the Minnesota Dept of Revenue with your weed to get the stamp.

Talk about being in the trick bag.
