Southwest offers a free companion pass+ bonus miles (wife) for a year
That offer was pretty unique. They hadn't done that before.
I of course earned companion pass doing the SW personal/business sign up bonuses in January 2020 to enjoy two years worth. That went well!

My hesitation is that I have a lot of the big point credit cards already and would not be eligible.
Could very well be the case. I would just talk to him first because maybe he can't help you. He's a very normal, honest dude. He will tell you if he can help or not.
I'm surprised his rates went up that much. Good for him.

The Chase Ink suggestion is good, but you might want to add an airline card as well for other perks.
For example, American Airlines is the primary carrier near me. Their $99 MasterCard provides free checked bags for up to 4 people and preferred boarding, among other things. Nearly the same as being gold tier in their FF program. If you sign up based on an inflight offer (the flight attendant provides the application and code) you’ll get a higher number of miles for signing up.

I was looking into AA MC. We fly out of Lafayette a lot and they have connections in DFW and Charlotte. I figured I can take advantage of the free checked bags and priority boarding
