But I will not pay a 6% fee to buy in a fund
It's 5.75% before breakpoints, but I agree with you. The funds performed pretty well over a long period of time, but I doubt many investors hold the same fund over 10 years. At some point they need some money or get scared when a 2008 happens and sells. I very rarely look at performance past 5 years. Operating expenses (12b-1 fees) are rarely a concern as well as performance is net of fees.

My adviser from Northwestern Mutual just opened me an IRA in December with $3k. Then I set it up to auto-deduct $300 a month starting Jan 10th.
I didn't know I was going to get hit with all the fees. Anyway, was charged 5.76% on the $3k and 5.78% on the $300. Called AF and guy said 5.75% is the max but that the numbers fluctuate. Can be higher, can be lower
I did get a dividend and foreign tax paid to me before EOY for about $20
but just a couple days ago, a $10 Annual fee was taken out
So instead of having $3,320 in there, I have $3,145. Fees really annoy the F out of me. I hope, as a couple posters in this thread have said, this fund is worth it.
I've looked on Fidelity and can get no load, no 12b fees, and low ER. But if AF returns are going to beat what I could do on my own with Fidelity, then the fees are worth it to me. I get someone to "manage" my accounts and hopefully do more.
But I am definitely questioning if I'm going to keep the $300/month going in at 5.78% vs maybe just doing it on my own...

Most posters (I would say >90%) on this board trade on their own. It is not hard.
What fund are you in?

I had an "advisor" "sell" me on a AF mutual fund about 30 years ago. After looking at the fees and the fund performance I did a little research, read a few books, and have been on my own ever since. Until recently I kept the AF as sort of a benchmark for how I was doing. At best it tracked some of my index funds, and underperformed others, I finally dumped it last year.
