I could be wrong on this but from what I've read, you cannot have an open chase sapphire card to get the bonus so I think he would have to cancel the CSR

I thought you would still need an active sapphire card to keep your reward points. If you downgrade you would lose your points. I doubt they would roll them over to a new account.

You cannot be holding a CSR and get the CSP bonus.

You also want to avoid canceling the CSR, as data points suggest you'll have to wait 30 days to apply for the CSP.

Product change the CSR to a freedom (it's nice having multiple freedoms anyway), then you can likely apply in a week, though some people are only needing to wait a few days.

How do people avoid losing their banked ultimate reward points by not having an active sapphire? They would have to transfer them to a new Freedom if they didn’t have one?

I can’t do it. I already have CSP that I’m going to downgrade and a CSR, but going to refer my wife

1) I assume anyone this far along in the game already has a Freedom (discontinued), Freedom Flex, or Freedom Unlimited.

2) All these Chase cards earn their "cash back" as Ultimate Rewards, so downgrading the CSP to Freedom wouldn't lose any points. The points just can't be used for anything but cash back until you couple a premium card with it again, which happens when you get your new CSP.

I see, I’ve been out of the game for a while, just accumulating points through spend and quarterly bonuses … I hope someone doesn’t lose their points if they are new to this

I was planning to transfer to my business ink.

I also have the freedom as my standby card already…

So do you guys think I would need to cancel the CSR and then wait 30 days?

This shite used to much simple when it was 2 years… 4 years certainly gets you settled in. But I guess that was the point.

Ya definitely move the points to those cards before doing anything.

The data points suggest you should downgrade the card to a freedom instead of canceling. The clock is shorter that way vs 30 days for closing.

I would not hold my breath that this deal lasts a whole month.

I have an old 5x Ink Bold I keep as my premium transfer card. I've already gotten like my fourth CSP/CSR (usually get CSP because bonus is higher) a year ago for 80k so my clock isn't anywhere near four years. I put a reminder on my Google calendar and then it surprises me one day to remind me to apply and do it again.

Which Freedom do you have? If you have the original Chase Freedom you can downgrade to Flex. If you have Flex you can downgrade to original Freedom.

Of course, you won't be able to hit the Flex bonus if you go that route, so hopefully you can downgrade to original Freedom and avoid any sign up bonus loss since that Freedom is no longer available for sign ups.

I have CFU, FF, and Original Freedom but I did it the old fashioned way through regular signups.

BTW you have nothing to lose. If they say no, continue on with your plan.

It’s the freedom unlimited.

So sounds like I should make the CSR the freedom flex.

Ya Unlimited and Flex/Original Freedom are totally different animals.

I'd try to go for the original Freedom if you can, that way you can still get the 20k Flex bonus later.

There's really no reason not to have a Freedom card. No fee and 5x categories are a good boost.

Between me and my wife I have 4 Freedoms, so that's 30k a quarter. I usually max two quarters easily. The third I could if I wanted. There's one quarter I can't max.

Ones I can are Groceries, Amazon, and PayPal (my utilities accept PayPal so I just prepay them)

Ended up doing the flex, it’s a solid card to have with their quarterly bonus. Rep. I spoke to said he recommended to wait until the current cycle closes, which will be in a couple weeks. So, fingers crossed it lasts until.

Thanks for the help!

I switched my Freedom card to 1.5% for all purchases. That extra 0.5% on all purchases more than makes up what I could make maxing out on the quarterlies. I have a flex that I only use to capture the quarterly extra 4%.

I would have kept all 3.

Multiple freedoms if you have the spend is great. Could have gotten a sign up bonus on the CFU (probably like 20k) that you didn't get because you product switched.

Gotta do the whole squeeze to get the juice!

I didn’t give up a freedom card. It’s been several years now but what I seem to remember before freedom unlimited and flex there was just freedom and you had a choice with going for the quarterly or the 1.5%.

Same here. I love it.

$395 annual fee that pays for itself in the form of an annual $300 hotel credit and another $100 credit.

2% back on all purchases, 5% on airlines, and 10% on hotels. The 10% on hotels usually nets out to a better rate than Travelocity or Booking.com.

The initial bonus is $750 if you spend $4,000 in the first three months, I think.

TSA Precheck and Global Entry is included. If you fly internationally, Global Entry is awesome. Never have had anyone in front of me coming through immigration. Stop, look into the camera, and go.

But my favorite benefit is not just the Capital One lounges but free Priority Pass membership. I live overseas and fly internationally 10+times a year. The first class lounges you have access to internationally are terrific. Some have amazing food. You can bring in a guest for free. I've had it for a year and have been in the lounges in Brussels, Bangkok, Istanbul, Lisbon, San Jose CR. They have all been excellent, with Brussels the best so far. 1,700 worldwide. Check out some of the lounges here...

Priority Pass membership

Domestically, it has really bad wait times in my experience. The only time I’ve been able to get in without a wait is when I have an early flight and there is no one in the airport. The wait at the Atlanta airport made it totally useless. I was glad to have access to Delta’s lounge.

I think you can reserve a spot in priority ahead of time. I saw that when I was flying back from Cabo last month.

Interesting. Looks like it’s available ant certain airports and there is a per person fee.
