Plus, if you want to keep all of that liquid, keep it in an MMA or some sort of interest bearing account. Even if it's only 1%-2%, at least it's not losing value, like so many stocks do. Yes there are winners out there, but I don't study the market enough to know what they are. I'll defer to other more strategic minds on this board.
Any suggestions? Seriously.
(You could use some of that to pay down your mortgage. That would be a guaranteed 5%-6% on your money, or whatever your rate is)

1 cent. Every payday I deposit money into one account that covers all my monthly bills, which are auto drafted. I put some into a Money Market Account. The rest I withdraw as cash - leaving one cent in my checking account.
So, what kind of growth do you expect from the one cent you leave in your checking account?

Where do you get 4% from a checking account desitiger?

www.oibank.com. It was 5.01 when I started but has gone down to 4.01.

I'll never forget the time I went to the ATM right off of campus and when it printed my reciept it showed a acct. balance of 163 dollars, I nearly fainted before I realized that it was not my reciept and mine printed out after.

checking account right now?
Wife's account ... $8600 and some change.
My account ... $1500 and some change.
I know, I know. Save the "why do you have separate accounts and why does she have more than me" comments ...

I have about 2,300 in one checking, and around 43,000 in my money market account for a rainy day.
my standard savings account tied to my checking has around $3,100. I usually only keep around 2300-$1500 in my checking.

I have 12 grand in my checking, 5 grand in a CD, 10 grand in a moneymarket and 6000 in savings. The 12 grand will be invested in more CDs whenever the rates decide to climb.

I totally understand. I had to separate my accounts with the first wife. The current (and last) wife and I have joint accounts. And, yes, she makes more than me.

It seems that there is a large disparity between those who keep almost nothing in their checking and those who keep LOTS.
I went to the bank today to shift 10K from checking (no interest) to savings (2 mussent interest). I was amazed to see that my bank, Chase, is now into the lottery business. My deposit has been entered into a drawing. And if I win they will double the 10K to 20K. I'm starting to think that Chase is owned by some people in Nigeria.

That is truly bizarre. And all you did was move money from one account to another?

I keep about ~$5000 in my local checking account, most of my savings is in ING, so I like to keep a little bit local since it would take a day or two to transfer from ING if I needed a chunk of cash.

$73.00, once a couple of checks clear. My checking account doesn't pay interest; why would I have any money in it?
x2.
I keep enough to pay bills and a few extra $ in there just in case.
I pull out cash at the beginning of the month for groceries, eating out, etc to make sure I don't blow a ton of money (aka budgeting).
