BREAKING: OpenAI prepares for IPO targeting up to $1 trillion valuation, planning to raise at least $60 billion with a listing in 2027.

The company aims to file as soon as H2 2026. At $1 trillion, OpenAI would enter public markets as one of the most valuable companies ever to IPO, surpassing Meta's $META $104 billion debut in 2012.

OpenAI's valuation has surged from $29 billion in early 2023 to $157 billion in its most recent private funding round just weeks ago. The company generates over $3 billion in annual revenue, primarily from ChatGPT subscriptions and API access.

The timing capitalizes on the AI infrastructure boom driving Nvidia $NVDA to $5 trillion and massive data center investment.

Microsoft $MSFT owns 49% of OpenAI's profits through a $13 billion investment and provides the Azure cloud infrastructure powering ChatGPT.

A $60 billion raise would be the largest IPO capital raise in history. The 2027 timeline gives OpenAI 18+ months to scale revenue and demonstrate sustainable economics before going public.

OpenAI may ultimately become a solid company. But I can’t see any path that doesn’t include some sort of bankruptcy restructure to wipe out early creditors in order to reestablish its value.

OpenAI is probably the last company you want to own in the AI boom. They are the one spending all the investors money with very little road to profitability.

Their current approach is showing very little path to scaling.

As stated above once people stop investing in it, bankruptcy is probably the first step to turning into a profit generating company

Let’s not act like we have any idea what they have in store or planned.

The biggest risk I see with OpenAI is how easy it is for customers to shift from one AI platform to the next. None of them are outright better than the other and, even if they are, it’s a short-term advantage. I currently pay for the premium model for ChatGPT but there’s nothing that is innately keeping me over the long-term.

They are going to lose 27 billion dollars this year alone.

They openly said that current paid users cost twice to three times as much in usage as they are currently charging. So prices need to double or probably quadruple here to turn any type of profit.

They stated their plan was to double paying users from 5% to 10%, which 5% is already the highest of any other AI business by far.

Altman has now opened up his platform to ads and adult content creation. Which he initially said would not happen. He knows he needs to start showing some sort of revenue growth to keep the investment dollars rolling in.

These business models aren’t about profit at this stage. This is about proof of concept that garners the use of billions and monetizing at a later date.

They have to continue to show great progress in the tools, expanding use cases and industry applications. It can absolutely blow up at some point but there isn’t an expectation that any of these firms are profitable.
