You go into debt for schools like Rice, Vandy, Duke…

Wrong. Go to a school you can afford and pick a worthwhile major.

High earners can come from any state school in the country. But in the case of these three examples, go to Texas instead of Rice, Tennessee instead of Vandy, UNC instead of Duke (all in-state) and you'll be just fine.

Now if you can avoid debt and still go to these private schools, go for it. But don't buy more school than you can afford.

was curious if anyone had any suggestions.

Instate school for free..

I have two degrees and had debt. Took me a while to pay it off and did.

My two degrees sit in a drawer at work.

My apprenticeship program I went through after school degree is hanging on the wall in my office.

It's what got me my salary.. it's double what my degrees would have paid out...

I went the SEC university route. Partied. Switched majors to an easier curriculum and partied some more.

Suffice it to say the student loans today are regrettable. Meanwhile, I’m still paying them off and going back to school over a decade later at a junior college and actually applying myself.

He was hoping to go to a smaller school, however, he may just have to handle up and do what is best here in state.

given the absurd amount of public universities in louisiana he can still achieve this. ULM, Northwestern, Nicholls, Southeastern, etc. Theyre not as small as hendrix but still

The most expensive part of college is being on your own and paying rent and food.
have you not seen the cost of tuition these days?

Move to Georgia

Edit to add:
Average in-state tuition is $10,463 in the 2021-2022 academic year.

In state kids get all of that covered with a 3.75 unweighted and 1200 SAT.
I think 90% is covered at 3.0 weighted.

You are left with books/fees and room/board. It isn't a school cost but like finding a place to live and food to eat, personal transportation is extra. But such is life.

My nephew is leaving TOPS on the table, that is for certain, perhaps 5kish a year from what I gather. Other than that, with a 27 ACT and 3.5 GPA, he says he'd be paying roughly the same as with Hendrix thru their "Tuition Advantage" program.

"Tuition Advantage: All students accepted for admission to Hendrix College will be considered for our Tuition Advantage scholarship program. If you are chosen, based on your academic record, leadership, extracurricular and volunteer activities, we will match the published in-state tuition at the flagship university in your home state. If you qualify for state or federal grants, or other outside scholarships, you can bring those to Hendrix as well. Add housing & meal costs to this Tuition Advantage flagship rate and students get the experience of a private school education for the cost of a public school tuition price."

He was awarded 26K in aid from the school, plus 4K more to meet LSU's tuition. List price at Hendrix is $$$$.

All that to say, if he'd go to UL, and live with one of his parents, he would really save! He says he rather go into debt. Kid just wants to get out of dodge I believe. That being said, I think he will be dedicated enough to work while in school, and still maintain his grades. I'm trying to get him to pick a decent major in hopes he can find a decent job upon graduation.

Appreciate all the feedback!
