1995 Nebraska had every player on the defensive line play 4 or more years in the nfl. Their middle linebacker played 8 nfl seasons The free safety had 2 nfl seasons One starting corner had 5 nfl seasons One starting corner had 10 nfl seasons The strong safety played 10 nfl seasons So 9 starters on defense played in the nfl. 8 starters on defense played more than 4 nfl seasons. Sounds pretty good eh?
I’m not trying to diminish Nebraska, but we aren’t talking about good teams.
1995 Nebraska is an all-time team and as elite as they come.
I’m saying that Bama and LSU both had better defenses in 2011 from a talent standpoint than Nebraska.
Offensively Nebraska had better numbers but I simply don’t trust an option team with limited passing to hurt an ultra elite defense.
I’d pick 2011 Bama 17-14 or something like that, but can see why some would take Nebraska.
I’d take 2019 LSU or 2020 Bama over 1995 Nebraska by 14+ because I don’t think their D could handle the speed or overall talent both had on offense running a system Nebraska wasn’t built to handle.
They would’ve had 240 pound LBs and run stopper safeties trying to handle 4.3 WRs in space. Forget it.

The quote from Saban was from 2018
My point is that the game had evolved significantly from 1995 to 2011 and the consequences of that evolution would’ve put the older roster at a major disadvantage schematically.
Now if you let safeties take off peoples heads or actually make contact with receivers in space like they did back in 1995 that’s a different conversation.
The rule changes drove the schematic evolution we see now. Given 1995 rules I’d probably take Nebraska, but the teams were built as they were when they were for a reason.

Pretty sure Nebraska won their conference and their side of the conference. Another reason they’re better.

They did, but in 2001 they got put in the Natty despite finishing 2nd in their division and skipping the champ game. 2-loss Colorado destroyed them 62-36 and won the conference champ. Barnett was arguing hard and pissed off that they deserved the spot over them. Crouch and Nebraska of course got pummeled by another GOAT

The stat for Alabama is blatantly false.

According to wiki, they had 8 players drafted and another 6 signed free agent contracts

What does 2001 have to do with anything? Heck, I’ll be the first to admit that Colorado deserved to go over Nebraska that year.
Nebraska 1995 never came close to losing. Closest game was a 14-point win where they led 35-7 going into the 4th and had their reserves in, with a hobbled Frazier at QB. He was forced to play at less than 100% because Berringer was out with a more significant injury. Their second closest victory was 23 points at #7 Colorado. Remember that Florida that year had an incredible offense with Spurrier’s fun-and-gun — they even won it all the following year, with Wuerffel winning the Heisman.

Those numbers arent right.
By my quick count 2011 Bama had at least 40 players on their three deep from that team go pro (18 on offense and 22 on defense).
Every starter for Bama played professionally at some point and almost all started in the NFL.

There were 26 players drafted in the next three drafts after the 2011 season. Never mind free agents.

What happened in their following game in Tempe?

Stop it
Nebraska had 1 pro bowl appearance total from their defense. Tyrann Mathieu is more accomplished by himself. Eric Reid made a pro bowl, Michael Brockers was all-rookie.

No Switzer, no Mickey Andrews, no Jimmy Johnson, no Orange Bowl, no FSU/Miami future All-Pro DL/LB’s, no conference championship, no playoff semifinal.
I think ‘95 Nebraska is Osborne’s best, but they had an easier road than most of his other national championship caliber teams.

When college football mythology becomes greater than fact, print mythology.
Recruiting experts guesstimates the starting lineup for Nebraska’s greatest team would have averaged 2.8 stars on offense and 3.2 stars on defense coming out of high school.
Osborne did it with steroids and a weight program like no other team in college football. He never did it with many bluebloods.

1995 Nebraska was the greatest college football team of all time. They physically and mentally broke teams with their style of play.
You could line that same team up right now and they’d bulldoze everyone. They made very few mistakes on offense and had a great defense.

There have been a lot of great defenses that would simply crowd the LOS and make Frazier throw. The 92 BAMA defense would have none of it.
Even in '95', the Cornhusker's DBs were porous. But these spread passing teams today in the HUNH would pass that team silly.
A lot of older teams would get run out of the stadium in today's 40-second clock and rules.

Are we debating the best team ever? Cause 2001 Miami has to be at the top of that discussion.
